In The Land Of The Free review

Narrated by Samuel L Jackson, this powerful if rhetoric-heavy UK-produced documentary argues for the innocence of America’s longest-held solitary confinement prisoners, the so-called Angola 3.

Via interviews and archive footage, director Vadim Jean recounts how the three inmates formed a Black Panther Party chapter to improve Angola Prison’s notoriously brutal conditions.

But in 1972, the murder of one of the guards resulted in the trio being “consigned to oblivion” in isolation.

Despite the intrusively mawkish soundtrack, it’s a valuable record of racial politics.
