id: People getting sick of modern combat. Also, consoles are slow, Rage mod tools coming at launch

So if you've read my hands-on with id's Rage from yesterday (which you can do just here if you haven't), you'll know that it's looking good. Very very good, in fact. But that knowledge isn't all we came away from that preview day with. Oh no. We've also acquired some words with id Creative Director Tim Willits. And he said some rather interesting things, in regards to Rage's chances of success, the generic, formulaic, misguided state of shooters in general, and how consoles really stack up against PC hardware (clue: they're slower, and not just in the ways you'd think).

Also, it seems that Rage's full set of development tools are going to be available when the PC version launches. Which isn't surprising, as id are always good like that, but it's welcome news regardless. Click the big magic arrow above to see and hear him moving and talking as if he were in the very room with you. It's witchcraft, I say.

Oh, great. Another reasons for PC snobs to diss on consoles. Whatevs, I'm looking forward to this game enough to just play it to play, not look at how much resolution the different versions have.

@p0wnd Ken Levine has said many times that the PC is where innovation takes place. He is a PC developer, always has been. If him prefering the PC makes him an elitist, he is a huge one. Didn't Carmack just say the other day that MW wouldn't get old and the fans would always want more?

I am one who is sick of modern combat... that's why I'm hoping R3 is the answer.

I agree with Tim. After Battlefield 3 I'm done with modern war games. My most anticipated FPS's are Prey 2, Bioshock Infinite, Dishonored, Rage, and the trailer I just saw on GR. I think it was Hard Reset? Please games industry NO MORE RUSSIANS OR TERRORISTS! I like Russians and i don't like shooting them much.

This game just keeps getting better and better, and the mention of sequels just makes me giddy with excitement.
  • db1331 - August 3, 2011 3:50 p.m.

@p0wnd All he did was state the fact that his game is physically unable to run as well on consoles as on PC and now he's an elitist?
  • p0wnd - August 3, 2011 3:01 p.m.

The only game developer i'll ever listen to is Ken Levine <3. Atleast he isn't a PC elitist.

@db1331 I agree, we're so used to a PR gloss thats applied to everything!
  • db1331 - August 3, 2011 12:31 p.m.

@DannyMB He's just being honest. It's rather refreshing.

Why did he say so much about the lag? Remember you're trying to sell this thing! Regarding the game itself I really dont see why there are so many complaints about it not being a true "open-world". Mass Effect isn't an open world game, tho some people think it is, and its bloody brilliant.

I must admit, when I first started looking at this game I just thought "Boderlands" but the more videos and articles I look at the more this is looking freaking awesome! The one thing that is concerning me is the textures and pop up on the PS3 version. I hope this will be fixed when it is released. Great articles Lord Houghton xx (one for Cundy)
