Hurricane Sandy cancels Assassin's Creed III GameStop midnight events

In the path of Hurricane Sandy, trying to decide whether to brave 90 mph winds and crashing tides for Assassin's Creed III's midnight launch? First off, seriously? Games aren't much fun when you're trapped in a submerged car. Second off, if you were planning to go to GameStop, the company's already made that call.

Kotaku reports the video game retail franchise plans to comply with directives from state and local authorities, and that "stores in the path of the storm will remain closed until it is safe to re-open and midnight openings for Assassin's Creed III have been cancelled in the northeast."

GameStop advises customers to contact their local stores to find out if they're closing and when they plan to re-open. We've requested comment from Best Buy, which had similarly planned midnight openings at some of its stores, and will update this article if and when we hear back.

It's horseshit. The entire northeast get's canceled for a glorified tropical storm. I can understand parts of NY, NJ, DC that were flooded but what about the other five states that were barely touched? Why wasn't it left up to each store?

I've stacked lots of stuff in case the electricity turns off, being in Brooklyn we hope nothing major happens.

Its a cat 1. You will be fine. I live in Florida. I fuckin sleep through cat 1s. The media is glorifying this because its something else to talk about besides the election. Its really not that fuckin serious.

I hear you. I live in PA now, but lived in Tampa for 10 years, and how many times did I have to go to school during a tropical storm lol. There had to literally be a 100% chance of an actual hurricane passing through for school to close. They declared a state of emergency in Pennsylvania on like Saturday. People are clearing stores like it's the zombie apocalypse. Granted I understand if you live in a low lying coastal area...but in PA, c'mon.

Yeah I know, as I said, the power shutting off is our only problem if it happens, not the actual thing

Saw the footage of NY this morning; I wish you guys the best. I didn't think about the fact that cities in FL are just built differently than in the northeast.

Thank goodness I live on the West Coast. Everyobdy be safe, okay? Also, a Day 1 Patch has been announced for some pretty rampant bugs and glitches that people have encountered. Don't have a link to it at the moment though.

KY here, it's been cold and they're calling for snow. All I know is I better get my copy of the AC3 Collectors edition tomorrow or I will cry!
  • ParagonT - October 29, 2012 3:04 p.m.

I live in Kentucky as well, you think it'll actually snow before Halloween? I keep hearing different things.
  • Captain_eff - October 29, 2012 6:01 p.m.

I'm not sure I've been hearing around 6-12 inches! It was flurrying/mixed with rain earlier, and I've heard it was slightly snowing.

Dang it... it snowed... and classes continue on. Time to dredge through it. *sigh*
