Gears of War 3 creators describe the ending of the trilogy

“We wanted the story to have a conclusion. We didn’t want to end on a cliffhanger.”

Are you ready to say goodbye to Marcus, Dom, Cole and Baird? While the Gears of War franchise will likely continue as long as it continues to make money, this developer diary from creator Cliff Bleszinksi and his team at Epic Games emphasizes that this is the end, or at least an end, for our war-weary heroes. The story we’ve been playing since 2006 is drawing to a definitive close, with what appears to be a flood of emotion. Watch:

Can any scene in Gears of War 3 reach the tragic heights of Dom and Maria’s reunion in Gears of War 2? Based on what we just saw, I’d guess Marcus’s anguished search for his father and Cole’s imaginary return to his glory days have the best shot.

Gears of War 3 releases on September 20. We’ll have hands-on impressions of the campaign, as well as video interviews with the developers, next month.

I keep meaning to play GoW. I played it for 10 minutes and then got kinda bored. I didn't dislike I just didn't feel like playing at that time. I want to give 1 and 2 a go before 3 comes.

Just the thought of this game gives me chills. I have an overwhelming feeling that I can't shake that this game is going to legendary.

"Dom and Maria’s reunion in Gears of War 2?" You mean "No, I have to shoot my wife? Cruse you locust, as I can't be assed to actually save her and instead must be emo until the next chapter!" Cliffy does great action. emotional scenes not so much.

I'm truly emotional, the original Gears was my first multiplayer game ever. The very first math I played I died by the gnasher in five seconds, I have been in love with the series ever since. Gears 2 was the first game I got at midnight, I bought it at Wal-mart, and pulled an all nighter playing co-op with my friend, it was also the first game I pre-ordered. Now Gears 3, the end. My favorite game of all time, one of the bloodiest games of all time, the game that got me into multiplayer, the game that got me into games, (I'm tearing up as I'm writing) finally ending. September 20 will be a very sad day, and also a happy one. Thank you Epic for putting this wonderful game into the world, Thank you Gears for getting me into multiplayer and games in general! And with that I say goodbye. :')

"Everyone is focused on survival, so they've resorted to low tech weapons" (Some bayonet action, followed by some improvised turrets) "Oh, and there's a giant Robot Exoskeleton you get to stomp around in"

"In the shit, up to here." I love Baird. This is going to be one fun game.

I can not wait for this, I'm really excited to see how Bernie plays a role in the game. She's been a staple of the novels since the beginning so I'm curious how she fits in. From the clip it looks like we may actually see the events that lead to Hoffman throwing Marcus in prison. All in all I can't wait to chainsaw some locust in September.

Wow... I've always been a fan of Gears, and with Karen Traviss, the writer, working on the story, I was doubly excited. Favorite writer plus one of my favorite franchises? Couldn't ask for anything more. But this has actually left me kinduv sad. It's going to actually end, with all the characters I've played with for five years. I mean, Gears of War 1 was the game I beat over and over again before I got LIVE, and it's a game series that has forever solidified my online bragging rights (forget Call of Duty, man). I better be damn impressed. With the personal attachment of Cliff, Rod, and Lee, and the sheer amazing qualities of Karen's work, I except nothing less than fantastic.

Epic discusses the Gears trilogy, Microsoft is figuring how much money to throw at Epic for the to extend the series to 6 games.

Damn. I expect this will be pretty good, eh?
  • Shforteenteen14 - July 23, 2011 3:42 a.m.

I vote Dom dies. He has nothing to live for, and it would give me a good sob. For the record, the writer they chose to help with the gears 3 story is totally fine with killing off her characters. So Im expecting at least 3 deaths.
