Gearbox immortalizes fallen Borderlands fan with Claptrap message and sequel role

You probably don't know the late Borderlands fan Michael John Mamaril, but thanks to Gearbox Software, his is a name destined to become part of Pandora lore. This October, Michael lost his life to cancer at the absurdly young age of 22, motivating his friend Carlo to approach the Gearbox team for help in honoring his memory with a personalized eulogy from the game's sassy robotic mascot, Claptrap. The studio agreed; and then did him one better. Brace yourself: this could get emotional.

Shortly after Carlo emailed Gearbox, he received a touching audio response and a promise from developers that Michael will be included as an NPC in Borderlands 2. For obvious reasons, we don't yet know the latter will look like, but thanks to Carlo's willingness to share his story with Destructoid, we can listen in on one of the most heartbreaking/uplifting developer messages in recent memory:

It's all to easy to let knee-jerk cynacism and snark dominate the conversation when it comes to video games. Let this be proof, then, that both developers and players share a deeper connection and passion for the industry than we sometimes give them credit for.

Man that had me tearing up the fact that they did that astonishes me because gaming developers don't usually acknowledge this stuff, TO MICHEAL!

I hope when I die one of my friends gets me a Uber Ent. shoutout. In all seriousness I give props to Gearbox and Carlo, and finally, *raises invisible glass* to Michael.

Very classy, Gearbox. I mean that. For all the stupid crap developers are doing these days it's doubly awesome for something like this to happen. I liked you guys anyway but this definitely scores you more points.

Gearbox is incredible. Activision for example would've simply ignored the request, others might send him a nice email. But Gearbox put him in their new game, this makes me respect every single worker at Gearbox. When I see this in Borderlands 2, I might cry.

I think its a little in bad taste to be making a useless comment like that and a little disrespectful. I know theres a lot worse things can be said, but c'mon you wanna be a comedian don't target a bunch of people paying respects to a young man who died of cancer as your audience.

That was the only time I didn't want to punch Claptrap in the face after hearing him speak.

This was really touching, I'll admit right now that i'm tearing up a little. I can't wait for borderlands 2, and I can't wait to meet this man's NPC. I salute Gearbox for going above and beyond when it comes to remembering him.
