Game of the Year nominations revealed

All last week, we doled out our nominees for genre awards, and you can expect the first of the winners to be announced with tomorrow's Shooter of the Year award. Here's a near-certainty: That winner will be in the video below, where we tick off our nominations for Game of the Year. Haters be damned, this year was great for games!

GamesRadar's Game of the Year will be announced on December 17!

    Super Hexagon for GOTY, guys.
  • letric5 - December 11, 2012 4:46 p.m.

About freaking time award has to go to Halo 4 it just has to XD. I honestly can't remember when the previous installment to the main storyline came out though Reach was an ok game... It is very difficult to rate GotY it is honestly a matter of opinion and they should have people who like certain types of game vote for their favorites and whichever game gets the most favorites should win... Best strategy game is most likely XCOM without a doubt, best shoot-em up would be Borderlands 2 probably seeing as you celebrate with all the gore and shit, best FPS would definitely be Halo 4 (Call of Duty Black Ops 2 is not even on the table as far as I'm concerned or even on the map I lost my respect for the franchise after MW2 a very long time ago... same shit different guns over and over and over again.) Best work of art videogame just by looking at the forum you guys would probably agree with Journey although I have never played it I would probably put it up there anyways. The Game of the Year Award will probably go to the game that drew the most fans in of 2012 or the most bought game with the contingency that it did not leave fans disappointed and overall unhappy... (Call of Duty) *COUGH COUGH* XD

So does this mean the Platinum Chalice awards are dead?
  • artcellrox - December 11, 2012 8:36 p.m.

Nope. Confirmed in previous comments that they will return after this.
  • GR HollanderCooper - December 11, 2012 11:07 p.m.

It'll return as large and sexy as ever. Don't you worry.
  • Mattel9 - December 11, 2012 3:53 p.m.

Really pulling for Walking Dead on this one. Journey was a great experience, but Walking Dead hit me with so much emotion.
  • metalgatesolid - December 11, 2012 1:34 p.m.

Journey would be great but from what i have understood Walking Dead is a game that deserves major praise.
  • Redeater - December 11, 2012 1:03 p.m.

I'm just glad to see Dishonored get so much love here.
  • Pwnz0r3d - December 11, 2012 11:54 a.m.

They all deserve GOTY. They're the best at what they do, XCOM is an amazing strategy game, Far Cry is one of the greatests FPS's ever, Walking Dead is perhaps the best example of using games to create an emotionally gripping story, even if the gameplay seems boring on the surface, Mass Effect was a great RPG/Shooter hybrid that I went through 4 times already, etc. Except for Assassin's Creed 3. That was the most disappointing game I've ever played. Connor is easily the most boring Assassin in the franchise. Worse than Desmond. He literally SOUNDS bored the whole game. I felt more immersed playing as Haytham Kenway because the voice acting in that segment of the game was phenomenal, while Connor was filled with horrid acting on his part, and the lack of mission variety along with that completely took away the immersion. Made me realize how well acted and written Ezio was.

... guys... where's Sleeping Dogs? You know, the game you awarded Game of the Month for August 2012? And no comments regarding it either? What gives? :( Anyway, it's probably a toss-up between SD and Journey for me... still kind of disappointed to see it so quickly ignored.
  • TheBountyHunted - December 11, 2012 9:11 a.m.

Dishonored as GOTY with Journey as a close runner up.
  • Clovin64 - December 11, 2012 9:10 a.m.

This is a tough choice, but I'll give my GOTY list a shot... 1. Journey 2. Dragon's Dogma 3. Resident Evil Revelaitions 4. Dishonored 5. Mass Effect 3 6. Final Fantasy XIII-2 7. Soul Calibur V 8. Max Payne 3 9. Borderlands 2 I'm still not completely sure of the exact order, but Journey is my GOTY for sure.
  • Darkhawk - December 11, 2012 9:01 a.m.

Journey, easily. Perhaps the greatest work of art in video game history.
  • KnowYourPokemon - December 11, 2012 8:31 a.m.

Journey is easily my game of the year.
  • Fox_Mulder - December 11, 2012 12:20 a.m.

Here's my list: 1. X-COM 2. Dishonored 3. Journey 4. Max Payne 3 5. Mass Effect 3 6. Halo 4 7. Borderlands 2 8. Gravity Rush 9. AC III 10. PS All Stars. I haven't gotten Far Cry 3 yet but I expect it will edge out PS All Stars. Also the MGS HD Collection on Vita deserves to be on my list, but for obvious reasons isn't. I don't know why, but I've played it more on Vita than I did on Xbox. Too bad I was dumb and didn't buy it for PS3, so I can't transfer saves.
  • Corsair89 - December 10, 2012 9:13 p.m.

My GotY list is as follows; 1. Dishonored 2. Zero Escape: Chapter 2: Virtue's Last Reward 3. XCOM: Enemy Unknown 4. Persona 4: Arena 5. Journey 6. Gravity Rush 7. Borderlands 2 8. Dead or Alive 5 9. Max Payne 3 10. Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational Dishonored is not only my GotY, but it's one of my favorite games of this generation. Virtue's Last Reward continues to prove that the Zero Escape series is the in the upper echelon of video game story telling. XCOM, despite its flaws, revives a long beloved series and proved itself to be a step in the right direction. There are plenty of games I couldn't count in the GotY running, but deserve to win something anyway: Remake of the Year - Persona 4: Golden F2P GotY - Tribes: Ascend Fan Game of the Year - Black Mesa Expansion/DLC of the Year - Civilization V: Gods and Kings The "It's About Goddamn Time" Award - Xenoblade Chronicles
  • Fox_Mulder - December 11, 2012 12:09 a.m.

How is Zero Escape? Obviously you like it but I played the demo and want a gamer's opinion on it because most of your GOTYs correlate with mine.
  • shawksta - December 10, 2012 5:39 p.m.

Nice touch of having your conference after the video. Really great choices, this year was one hell of a great year. The choices are no different, besides Borderlands 2 and Kid Icarus Uprising being my top favs, I enjoyed Far Cry 3 just as i expected it, The Walking Dead was just touching and im against all the naysayers babbling a Visual Novel isnt a game. Journey is one heck of a work of art, and Dishonored is just breath of fresh air on familiar ground. Good luck to all games, your all winners for being Nominee's!
  • rainn'sgaydar - December 10, 2012 7:12 p.m.

I'm torn between which to start between Dishonored and The Walking Dead. Suggestion?
  • BladedFalcon - December 10, 2012 7:54 p.m.

Had both games in queue until a few days ago. I chose the Walking dead first, and i think it was a good decision. Mainly because it's probably far shorter than Dishonored, and it will take you less time to beat it, and so you will be able to get what the hype is all about while the whole GOTY thing is still on full steam. That being said, I think it pretty much just comes to personal preference if you plan to play both anyway. If you've played too many FPS or stealth games like say, hitman, maybe the walking dead can serve as a nice palette cleanser. Conversely, if you've played post-apocaliptic, or choice driven RPGs, then maybe dishonored? XD
