First Minecraft convention heading to Las Vegas this November

If you'd told players ten years ago that a game not even out of beta-testing could command a following substantial enough to warrant a full-sized convention in Las Vegas, they'd have laughed as hard as you did at Bill Gates' new console. But here we are in 2011, and Minecraft – whose first build released in 2009 and which has been in paid Beta since late last year – is almost ready to launch for reals. And this is a big deal for enough people that they're all getting together in Vegas to be there when it happens.

Minecon will be held at Las Vegas' Mandalay Bay resort and casino over the 18th-19th of November. Tickets and convention details will start appearing next week when the registration site is launched. “I’m really looking forward to getting up on stage and pushing the button to upload the final build,” says designer Markus “Notch” Persson, adding that the milestone is “something we’d never been able to do without our fans, so it feels natural to celebrate it with them.”

Final build? So that's it for Minecraft? What'll Persson do when the convention is over with? “We’ll just go back home and keep working on Minecraft.” In the case of a game like Minecraft, “finished” really kind of just means “getting started.” Will you be booking a ticket for Minecon?

@jmcgrotty You're an idiot. Minecraft is obviously a videogame , please explain why you think it isn't.

Why can't any of this stuff be in Ireland. : (

Dammit! Quit saying that Minecraft is a game! It isn't a game. That would be like saying that the turtle in the LOGO programming language is a fully functional game engine.

Well, time to build all of Vegas, to scale. /sigh.... And I had planned on having a life this semester.

The slowdown caused by the attempts to download the final build will be felt across the internet. Not really, but I'm thinking it'll probably put their server out.

The clapping fallowing the upload of the final build will be heard for miles.

Why is everything always in Vegas?! Why not New York (where I live) or some other place?! I WANT to be here, but not at the expense of a flight tight and hours worth of travel!
