First free Xbox Live Games with Gold is Defense Grid: The Awakening

Shares

The first Xbox Live Games with Gold title is Defense Grid: The Awakening. The Xbox Live Arcade title normally costs 800 Microsoft Points ($10) but is free for Gold members from July 1 to July 15.

We previously reported that Halo 3 and Assassin's Creed II would kick off the twice-monthly free games program, but that was evidently a mix-up. Microsoft mentioned both titles would be featured when it debuted Games with Gold, but did not say they'd be the first two to appear.

Xbox Live's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb apologized for the disappointment in a Reddit thread about the title, where several users complained about the relatively low-profile game compared to some of PlayStation Plus' offerings.

"I don't work in marketing, but I am going to make them aware of this thread," Hryb wrote.

The program is slated to last through December 2013, though Hryb said it may last longer if it fares well. Either way, you don't have to remain a paid member to play the games.

Wasn't the first one Fable III, you guys knew they were giving Fable III away for free last month right? Right?

It's great that they're doing this but they are a little late to the party. Playstation has been providing this for what 3-4 years? And the games they give away and discount are ones we have actually heard of.

Microsoft announced Games For Gold at E3 2013, and they have a duty to keep a hold on the gamers they still have. Using 'Defense Grid' an as an official introductory title to the GFG program is still a joke, it's nothing more than a puny Arcade title. If they plan on ending the program by the end of the year, they should AT LEAST be able to afford the release of something good like Eternal Sonata or something of that caliber.

I can't wait until they announce that the indie hit Minecraft will be one of the free games. Get it? Because MS thinks indie means a PC game ported to consoles....

But...Mojang still owns itself...minecraft is still technically an indie game.

Nintendo still owns themselves. Super Mario Galaxy is a Nintendo game and has no other studio name on it. Owning yourself is not the only criteria for being an "indie" developer.

Wasn't Fable 3 the first free Gold game? I'm sure I downloaded that the other week. Maybe I dreamt it.

    Perhaps it was an illusion.

Fable III wasn't officially a Games with Gold feature, it was sort of given out because of some glitch or error apparently. An extra free game for XBLG members, so it's a win.

Actually, Fable 3 is in fact listed on the Games with Gold page as the first free game.

Your right Fable 3 was the first one to download for free, cause i saw it for free and downloaded it.

Yeah, not wanting to look a gift horse in the mouth or anything, but can't help but feel they're taking the piss a bit...
