Fallout: New Vegas guide longer than War and Peace

With over half a million words between its front and back cover, the Fallout: New Vegas guide will be the biggest official guide ever released for a Bethesda game. The epic tome is longer than literary classics, such as War and Peace and Les Misérables. In terms of word count, it also blows Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead out of the water, as well as J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Tips, tables, maps, and details on the many rival factions in New Vegas will be included in the guide. You can read more about the guide on Bethesda’s blog, where author David Hodgson takes you on a tour through the Mojave Wasteland.

The Official Strategy Guide will be priced at $24.99. The hardcover Collector’s Edition will cost $34.99. Both versions will be available on October 19 when the game launches for US audiences. Fallout: New Vegas will launch for European audiences on October 22.

Normally I avoid guides at all cost, but with games like this where there is so much content and so much to do that it can take months or years for the internet to post everything, I might get this guide with this game (assuming that it either has a gore filter or the pc version lets you alter the code to add something like Fallout 3's bDisableAllGore=1).

I like big books and I cannot lie! Sorry for the corniness. But I'm sure the Mythbusters could prove this thing can stop a bullet.

I pre-ordered this... happiness is ensuing.

I had an oblivion guide, I loved it so much. If I get this game I'll probably get the hardcover.

I'm getting the CE for christmas, it's gonna be brilliant! Although if it's going into next year's Golden Joystick awards, it's gonna have some massive competition. In fact, I'm gonna make a bold statement: From the day New Vegas is released, until the day that Duke Nukem Forever is released, is when the best games of this generation will be released (including NV and DNF). Oh, and can we PLEASE get rid of reCAPTCHA? it's getting piss annoying, and it's not stopping anything at all.

Holy hell, I haven't even finished Fallout 3 yet.

Surely War and Peace and Les Miserables are longer books than Harry Potter and the deathly hallows? HP wasnt as thick as those two and the font was larger. Aside from that, big guide for a big game.

How can you review a game like New Vegas in one day is my question.
  • hester2 - October 15, 2010 8:04 p.m.

@juicenpancakes Usually with Bethesda games, especially their flagship titles (Elder Scrolls and Fallout), the embargo lifts on release day or a few hours before it. Not really sure why since they are consistently high quality games. The only explanation I can think of is they want everything to come out at once so that early reviews with high scores don't look suspicious.

Dang. That's a big ass mutha. Buy 1 thing I always wanted to know was do plasma weapons do more damage then normal guns to humans, anything like the weapon type does more damage than to certain creatures? Like for example a plasma pistol hurts a human more than a ghoul or robot? I never found anything like that out in the Fallout 3 guide book.

When can we expect a New Vegas review? I think Mikel is doing it, right? I just didn't know if there was an embargo up that ends on Saturday or something.
