E3 2011: Payday: The Heist - a no show at the Sony conference, but this Sony Online shooter is one of the most promising games of the show

Remember that scene in Point Break where Patrick Swayze and friends rob a bank? Or maybe you enjoyed the bank robbery in GTA IV? Well, imagine playing either of those to scenes in 4-player co-op on your PS3. Yes, you're right - that does sound like a lot of fun. But wait - this isn't just a fun game of 'what if' - it's actually happening, thanks to Sony Online Entertainment's forthcoming first-person shooter Payday: The Heist - which PC Gamer reckons could steal the show at E3. Check out gameplay and the first trailer here:

Tim Edwards of PC Gamer has played and previewed the game and says if enough people get wind of it, it could be the game of the show. High praise indeed.

If it does turn out to be, at the very least, 'Left 4 Dead with cops', that's fine by us. Here's the game being played at the event - see what you make of it:

At the time of writing, a 'learn to surf' sidequest looks unlikely. And although a close encounter with a lawnmower blade is also unconfirmed, judging by the amount of gore and headshot action going down, we wouldn't put it past Payday.

I certainly hope the AI gets a major upgrade before it comes out.
  • Frostyra - June 10, 2011 12:12 a.m.

I can see Fox News vomiting bullshit about this already. Nonetheless, looks pretty awesome.
  • SunnyvaleTrash - June 9, 2011 8:10 p.m.

Definitely intrigued. Hope more news comes out about it.

I thought once about how a L4D squad like game but instead of zombies with soldier could be awesome. It might be hard to tune the AI to make it truly great but sounds very interesting.

@db1331. It's for PSN and should hopefully be priced accordingly.
  • StoneDreadnaught - June 9, 2011 5:44 p.m.

I can already hear anti-game activists calling this game out. "The game Heist: Payday, is a First-Person Shooter that takes players through 6 realistic banks, with the intent of robbing them." @Lucretiel No one takes Yack Thompson seriously. I think Fox News has overshadowed him as the big-name crazy.

@ThatGuyFromTV Fair's fair mate, PS3 missed out on L4D so it's time they got something special! xD Seriously though, this does look like great fun, definitely worth keeping track of. So long as I get to be De Niro.

Oh man Yack Thompson is gonna have a f*cking field day with this one
  • marioman50 - June 9, 2011 4:31 p.m.

There should be a developer walk-through video. These 2 videos don't have me excited at all.
  • ThatGuyFromTV - June 9, 2011 4:28 p.m.

Fuck Sony for making their own game an exclusive for their own system. CMON! LET THE XBOX PEOPLE IN ON THIS!!
  • insertdisk - June 9, 2011 4:11 p.m.

Im liking the look of this more than MW3 easily. This is not 'more of the same' although that red screen is annoying.
  • phate - June 9, 2011 3:38 p.m.

Looks a lot like what the original Kane and lynch multiplayer was supposed to be like.
  • JornnyRamone - June 9, 2011 2:58 p.m.

This would be fine as a #15 or maybe even a $20 download, but I hope they aren't expecting people to shell out $50 or $60 for a game with 6 levels.
