E3 2010 Game Critics Awards final, 3DS takes Best of Show

Nintendo, EA, and Bethesda get the most E3 editor lovin'

It may seem pointless to award honors to a bunch of unreleased games, but the tradition at least offers an easy-to-digest E3 hype gauge. Nintendo's 3DS won Best Hardware and Best of Show, and based on our time with it, the awards are deserved. But since we love to play devil's advocate, we'll point out that the Wii won Best of Show in 2006, and you know how much we love it now.

Bethesda/id's RAGE was the winningest game with three awards, including Best Console Game. Publisher-wise, Electronic Arts took home the most awards, with four total. The complete list of winners, with links to our existing previews, screens, and videos, is below:

I think that we need some MOAR kick-ass new IP's. Only 2 new properties made this list... (including Dance Central... *shudder*) sad. I hope that new Nintendo character makes a splash.

I bet hot pursuit will be just another generic NFS. Think Most Wanted with updated graphics. I hate the "one game a year" treatment some franchises get. This is what, the 12th NFS game? I lost count by the time those "underground" games came out.

Is the fact that Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood won for best online multiplayer bode well for it? Or were there few games at the show that had online multiplayer? Good thing I buy games for single and not multiplayer.

I would have liked to see Epic Yarn as the best original game (Dance Central? Original? It's DDR with motion controls.) But Epic Yarn /is/ really only a new look at an old idea (Kirby). Still, DC didn't deserve it. ReCaptcha: tion minutiae... wut?

@TheGeek Eh, we never said we "hate" the Wii. And for the record, we haven't been very kind to Kinect and Move. We felt that Nintendo abandoned us, and now they're coming back our way, so we're optimistic. We still aren't big fans of the Wii... its crap online support, not-as-advertised motion control (until MotionPlus), glut of crappy third-party games, well, there are lots of reasons. Most of the first-party games have been great, and we've recognized that. But it just doesn't wow us like it did in 2006... we sort of like using controllers, y'know? And we still think the 3DS is amazing. Trust me, there are more Nintendo fans here than there are fans of anything else.

I'm not following it very closely but Rage does look pretty awesome! At least it has pretty graphics, I haven't played it, of course.

@supersteer Are you serious? We've been hearing so much about this game that everyone is burnt out of Gran Turismo 5 hype, its nothing new. So it deserves no awards. Am I the only one that is bothered that Portal 2 made the best PC game when Rage was listed under the best console game under as PC? Portal 2 will be released on the 360 and PS3 as well. Mortal Kombat should have recieved the best fighting game, but I suppose more people would have been mad about that. If anything it should recieve an honorable mention.

Why do you guys hate the Wii so much? So what if its not HD or "modern"? So what if its "different"? It also happens to be the best selling console of this generation, not including the DS. Nintendo has "different" and "next-generation" down to an art. Sony comes out with a motion controller and everyone announces the end of the Wii. Sure Nintendo isn't perfect (remember the Virtual Boy?) but they are trying to be different and innovative, while Sony rehashes old stuff (selling PS2 HD games? ugh...) Nintendo deserves to be on top this time around, and I only hope that Microsoft and Sony bring their A game on the next generation.

Shame I don't see more of the nintendo games in that, feels like kirby's epic yarn and Skywaqrd sword should have won something.... Of course I am a nintendo fanboy :-P
