Dust 514 video preview - Hands-on with the closed beta

It may not look like it on the surface, but Dust 514 is an experimental game charting untested waters (or galaxies, whichever). Developer CCP--the team behind the venerable space MMO EVE Online--is integrating this free-to-play shooter with the world of EVE, allowing the two sci-fi titans to interact in a shared universe. We've done a full preview in the past, but we recently had a chance to jump into Dust's closed beta to see how everything's coming along. Check out the video below for our impressions.

Note: The Codex update for Dust 514 is now live.

    I feel so bad for you reviewer : ( Did you see the dropship at the end? that's not the graphics of dust 514, that's a horrible GPU bug where textures don't load. Your game was full of objects with no textures. If you stare at them for like 2 min they will randomly becoming pretty. Don't judge the games graphics yet ;_;

    My friend introduced this game to me and I love it. There have been so many problems with this game ever since I started, except that every time one gets fixed, that fix becomes the problem. It started with tanks being unstoppable so they made the anti-vehicle weapons more effective. That made basic swarm missiles (anti-vehicle) overpowered so they decreased the speed of them and increased the defenses of dropships. Now dropships act like invincible flying tanks, and they're currently working on a fix for that. Other items such as the repair tool (medgun), mass driver (grenade launcher), and nova knife (charge up melee weapon) seem relatively ineffective due to inbalance of the other weapons, especially the assault rifle. Obviously this is a beta, so these problems are to be expected, but other than that the game is really fun. There are four different classes each representing a role on the battlefield, and you gain active points in battle as well as passive points while you're not playing. The points can be spent on what YOU want to unlock and get better at. The best part in my opinion is that it is entirely free to play. There are no items that you can spend real money on that are not also available with in-game money. These items are instead available to use earlier in the game than you would normally get them.

    Most console "betas" are more early multiplayer demos than anything else. Because Dust 514 is doing some heavy integration with an MMO where economy is everything, CCP's definitely taking their time to make sure they get everything balanced and ready before they bring everything live. I'm sure there's tons of tweaking to be done yet. But yeah, it's totally a pretty cool game, and the customization is nuts.

    I played the beta a bit(thanks to GR), and I couldn't really get a handle on what was happening. Admittedly, I didn't stick with it. I may give it another shot.
