Rayman Raving Rabbids

Mini-games take a back seat to two kinds of platforming action

Life is funny sometimes. VHS beat out Betamax despite being the inferior format, Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie have made careers out of being stupider (and admittedly, potentially sluttier) than everyone else in the room, and the DS version of Rayman Raving Rabbids is a full-blown side-scrolling platform action game. That’s right – the full-sized consoles got a collection of mini-games suitable for a portable game, but on-the-go DS players get a full-sized offering. Nah, that’s not backwards.

Gameplay itself takes on three distinct forms. The first is pretty classic Rayman action – you run across the screen using the d-pad, and jump, punch, or throw lums – the little points of light you collect – like shuriken using the face buttons. There are also four elementally-themed suits that enable you to occasionally summon a pushable, climbable boulder (earth suit), get hold of a bomb (fire suit), freeze water, and so on. Of course, you’re also fending off all sorts of bad guy, including the oddly common crazed-bunny-with-plunger-gun. Oh, and if you collect all the pieces, Rayman gets a tank, the “Rayman Gear", complete with missiles, machine gun, and a winch-and-hook, to use in boss battles.

The second type of level is all about stylus control, and isn’t entirely unlike the excellent Kirby: Canvas Curse. Rayman runs across the screen at a steady pace, typically chased by bunnies in a lightning-shooting UFO, and its up to you to make sure he doesn’t get hung up. You’ll use stylus taps and slashes on the touch screen to grab lums, smash crates, flip switches, cut chains (say, on a drawbridge), and launch Rayman skyward. The suit-related powers apply here as well, such as when you fireblast enemies or rub a geyser to freeze it solid. You can even blow into the DS mic to push the UFO back.
