Dragon Quest X will (almost definitely) be unveiled Monday September 5

Square Enix has announced that it will be revealing the next Dragon Quest game Monday, September 5 in Japan. The news will be broadcast live through the publisher's Ustream channel at 2 p.m. Japan time (1 a.m. Eastern time) and we have a sneaking suspicion what it’ll be about.

While Dragon Quest X wasn't specifically mentioned, we know it's far along in development because of a remark made by Dragon Quest series composer Koichi Sugiyama last April. Sugiyama said that he was working on the soundtrack for Dragon Quest X for some time in 2012. Furthermore, a trailer for Dragon Quest X will ship with the Dragon Quest Anniversary Collection when it comes out on September 15. The collection is a Japan-only title, but we don't think Square Enix will put the first look at the new Dragon Quest in another game, especially when it could do something like a live online announcement preceded by an announcement that it'll be making an announcement.

While Square Enix revealed it was making Dragon Quest X for Wii back in 2008, no details, screens, or excerpts of companion novels for the game have been revealed so far. If the broadcast is what we think it is, Dragon Quest X will be the first Dragon Quest made for a home console since Dragon Quest VIII was released in 2004, unless you count Tower of Mirrors. Which we don't.

I have never played a Dragon Quest game (for more than five minutes) in my life, but I have grown up around two or three friends who have played them their entire lives. I don't own a handheld, and I have been looking for a reason to pull my Wii out. So...maybe.

As far as JRPGS go, the wii is the best fit, especially since its Dragon Quest and its sucess on the DS with Starry sky's. Sure 8 was on PS2 and popular but thats all last gen.Standards changed, This game would be ignored to the standard crowd, furthermore its nice Cartoon graphics with realistic touches fits well with the wii as others are there aswell. Im pretty sure nothing would change if it was on PS3, we care about gameplay which I hope Square gets.

The DQ games are always on the most popular systems of the generation, and all the Operation Rainfall supporters shows that there is an audience for JRPGS on the Wii. Right?
  • shawksta - September 3, 2011 2:24 a.m.

Yeah, Monster hunter, xenoblade, last story and more. JRPGS can be thrown allot these days, especially since people think a Exp system on a shooter/action adventure is revolutionary, handhelds and Wii are the only best places for them.

I thought that I read that they were still aiming for an end-of-2011 release, but I haven't seen any mention of that in any of the articles about this conference that I've read on various sites. The game was declared "nearly finished" in April of this year, so they could still announce a December release. This game would have a *MONSTER* Christmas (especially in Japan), and I'm pretty sure Square Enix and Nintendo both know this.

Why cant this be on ps3 T-T i loved DQ8, but i think putting it on the wii is just terrible. they could make it so much better if it was on a different console. or hell even pc. just not wii
  • shawksta - September 3, 2011 2:26 a.m.

JRPGS have done very well on the wii, Especially a game like DQ is a good place for it, dont be so bias/brash
  • shawksta - September 3, 2011 2:37 a.m.

Also, theres no way it could be better on a different console, DQ's artstyle can be enhanced through wii alone and all we care about is gameplay, which most wii games care about, and if any online is involved, the wii does well with co-op, but thats an if. unless you want them to ruin the series by focusing on making everything realistic, theres nothing better if it was on anything else.

lets hope this does not go the way of Project Rainfall

Does anyone really want this on Wii?

For the love of all that is good, put DQ 10 on the 3DS as well. DQ 9 was probably my favorite DS game of the past two (maybe even three) years and it's what got me started on the franchise (it even made good use of street pass before the 3DS had street pass). I'd buy a 3DS version of this immediately (although if it is Wii only, I can be OK with just borrowing the Wii from my grandparents, but common, the 3DS is going to handle it better with its control scheme).
