Dead or Alive 5 trailer shows off new stage and special guest Akira from Virtua Fighter

Team Ninja's big return to fighting games continues to build to its fall release later this year. This newest trailer showcases a new stage with a battle between series stars Kasumi and Ayane. But at about the halfway point, things take an odd turn.

Out of nowhere comes Virtua Fighter's lead martial artist, Akira Yuki. Though crossovers like this have popped up before, this is the first time DoA has ever featured a character from a competing fighting franchise (though many will recall the Spartan named Nicole-458 that appeared in DoA4). Akira's move set in the video seemed pretty accurate to what he pulls off in VF5, but with that extra cinematic edge DoA5 is trying t add to the genre.

The game is planned for fall release this year, but if you preorder Ninja Gaiden 3, you'll get early access to a demo.

Hmm, this Akira thing is kinda crazy. Haven't played DoA a lot since 2 (which I got with my PS2), played a little of DoA3 but really enjoyed DoA2, the combat system was good and I thought the game was always good-looking even compared to some later PS2 games. Hopefully this comes through well.

I'm still worried about how the game will actually play. Everything I've read leads me to believe that it's just a bunch of water downed DoA4 combat with semi-spammable quick time events thrown in. It honestly looks like SoulCalibur's ringout but with cutscenes so you don't feel as bad when it happens. And when the game doesn't do well, expect the new director to say it wasn't really his fault like he's done in the past. Also, I was promised new characters dammit! Akira is not new! He's welcome, but not new.

I gotta say, I like the new art direction. The female characters now actually look different from one another, and not just like large breasted porcelain dolls.
