I like the article a lot but sort of disagree with a lot of it. I stopped playing online after quake 3/ BF42 mainly because of the things you quoted. While not cheating, using exploits, spamming, raping etc doesn't feel right to me. I play to enjoy, not to win. We didn't win the war because somebody knew the one best sniping spot, it was more a free for all with individual skill being only a part of it. Online now is often just no fun if you have a life, kids, job etc, unless it is with people you know. I wish somebody would set up a gentlemans club where elderly gamers like myself could just drop in and out and have a good killzap without having to devote my life to it. @RebornKusabi.. I can beat you, I had my first game, a Binatone TV game when I was 6, nearly 35 years ago!!1

Does Taking advantage of glitches count as "cheap" or is it Cheating?

Typically in an online shooter, the game won't even let you turn auto-aim off. In single-player, I would definitely suggest it. If for some reason you find an online shooter that allows toggling of auto-aim, it's actually up to your preference, because sometimes auto-aim can tug your reticle away from a headshot. So in those cases, go with what works best for you.

Good article :D like everyone, I sometimes vent off when losing to the same tactics over and over.. of course then realise why these tactics work. Ken in the early days of SFIV was a pain to start with, but eventually you could bait half of them into a Shoryuken-wiff, and punish them for it. As a big 2D fighter fan, I am painfully aware there's many people better than me, but I'm an above average player at least.. purely for the amount of time I like to play them. But just like RebornKusabi, I really don't enjoy playing online with strangers much. Much prefer playing with friends, cause it's always so much more amiable when you lose OR win. But I guess this is limiting, playing against a wide range of people can test your abilities much more. One thing you didn't mention, luck plays a big part in many different games (not all, of course). Sometimes you're lucky, sometimes you're not. Of course over time it will regress to the mean, but if you only play online a small amount of time, and just happen to be grouped with much better players most of those times, it will kill your confidence.. even if you have good skill, you can feel a total loser. Another reason for playing more, I suppose!

You say to turn off all auto aim but yet you say to play to win it. If Auto aim helps the winner should it not also be used?

I must say, quite an amazing read. This article is fantastic, a prime example of video game journalism if I do say so myself. I attempt to do a lot of the things mentioned in this article if I struggle with a specific game, but I have found some of the things mentioned here quite enlightening. I always call people cheap, and it just makes me more angry with the person I'm playing against. I guess I should eliminate that mindset. Once again, kudos on such a stunning article.

Halfway through the article and while I don't agree with almost 85% of it so far, due to the fact that I can't stand playing online games unless it's doing so with friends from work/school, but it is pretty well written. Great article although it's rather the exact opposite than what I expected the article to be about lol

I wanted to just say, before reading the article, that I HAVE thought about why I play video games... it's just that the answer I arrive at is that I play video games because it's something that I've been doing for the last 19 years and it's all I know how to do with my free time. However, Matthew, I would like to see what YOUR reason for why I do is. So now I read your article lol
