Beyond Good & Evil 2 slowed by work on Rayman games

Beyond Good & Evil 2 is still coming, but it remains on series creator Michel Ancel's backburner. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot spoke with Polygon about the fate of the long-awaited sequel, and why fans have another of Ancel's whimsical properties to blame for the delays.

"What's very important is that Michel Ancel is kind of doing too many things at the same time," Guillemot said. "He was working on Rayman Origins last year, and he's working a lot on Rayman Legends this year. So, you know, when he does that, he kind of puts too much of his time on the other projects that he has."

Beyond Good & Evil was polished up in an HD re-release last year, but Guillemot said Ubisoft still wants to continue the story. Unfortunately, there are only so many hours in the day--even in France--and Rayman Legends was already delayed from launching on Wii U this month to the first quarter of 2013.

"[T]here are so many things that have to be done that, you know, this one is going to come in line at one point, but at the moment Michel is really on Rayman Legends."

Slowed? So how slow could it possibly be going now? As slow as a snail crawling through thick molasses in a Siberian winter? As slow as an octogenarian behind the wheel of an out of gas Buick? As slow as dial-up porn? The people need to know.

Indeed... Slow as in "this will take at least 3 times the dev time of Duke Nukem Forever". Disappointing but hoping Michel Ancel can cash in with Rayman games so he can finally release this sequel.

I agree. If Rayman can bankroll the BG&E project, then I'll grin and bear it.

Really enjoyed Beyond G&E 1, so I hope this eventually sees the light of day.

It's a worthwhile sacrifice for more awesome Rayman games. I'll probably be slaughtered for this, but I found Rayman Origins twice as enjoyable as Beyond Good and Evil.

Damn, I just finished Beyond Good and Evil today and I'm still super hyped over it. I hope it isn't delayed for too long before production picks up.

I for one don't really want more Rayman games. At least, not annually. Look at the Rabbids games as an example. Only the first and the 4th (Rabbids go Home) were really good. The rest ranged from solid (RRR2) to meh (RRR3, Travel in Time) to piss-poor (Alive and Kicking, the ports of RRR1). I don't think Rayman's had any real misses (that bad port of Rayman 2 to the DS aside), but anything can happen.

Rayman Legends might be the reason I pick up a Wii U, well, and Bayonetta 2 obviously. I'm nearly dont Beyond Good and Evil, and so far it's a really good game... Now, I don't know if it deserves the recognition it gets, but then again it has aged a bit. I'd definitely be happy for the sequel to see the light of day.

I think Ancel said BG&E2 was in development for next-gen consoles some time ago. We wouldn't see the game until late 2013 anyway. And I'm okay with delaying it until 2014 to give the programmers more time to optimize for new hardware.
