6 ways we'd like to see Pokemon Black & White be different

A recent CVG story had some interesting new info regarding Pokemon Black & White:

“[…] according to the Japanese press release, there will be major differences between the two versions. Details on these will be released in the future.”

If the differences are as big as the press release says, this could be a huge departure for the series.

Traditionally, the different versions of new Pokemon games have been identical, with the exception of a few exclusive Pokemon depending on your version. While an optimist saw the exclusivity of each version as a way to promote trading, the pessimist viewed it as a quick cash grab by Nintendo to move more copies of the game.

Global wi-fi trading (and candy filled vans) have largely eliminated the need to meet up with other players IRL, and these new exclusivity changes seem intended to give players a reason, but hopefully not a need, to purchase and play both versions.

We’ve cooked up a small list of potential changes between the two versions and the likelihood of each actually happening. Feel free to hypothesize yourself in the comments, or just discuss whether or not you like the idea of each version having major exclusives.

1. Differences in the story mode

Likelihood: Likely

While not a game altering change, each version could share similar plot lines, though with branching paths. While the beginning will surely be identical, each game could potentially have exclusive towns or side quests between the gym battles, giving Black & White unique experiences wrapped around the same core.

2. Exclusive gym leaders

Likelihood: Unlikely

While it’s a far out theory, each game could potentially have its own set of unique Gym Leaders, forcing players to tackle different challenges. While the games will certainly follow the same format of working your way up from a novice trainer to a Pokemon master, presenting each version with a different set of gym leaders would be a unique way to change up the gameplay.

3. Exclusive Pokemon

Likelihood: Confirmed

Already confirmed by the exclusivity of the two new legendaries, each game will certainly have its fair share of exclusive Pokemon. Thankfully, wi-fi trading will make continue to make it easy to transfer them from game to game.

4. Transferable trainers

Likelihood: Unlikely

If the games, do in fact, have their own unique challenges, there might be some logic in transferring your trainer from one game to the other, to collect all of the badges and conquer the unique gym leaders. It would definitely be a neat touch to transfer into the opposite game with your current Pokemon,  and just continuing your hunt for badges by battling gym leaders who have been scaled up to your level.

5. Be the bad guy

Likelihood: Slim

Resident Pokemon Master Carolyn Gudmundson suggested this tantalizing idea: that in Pokemon Black version, you play as the rival trainer. The rival trainer has been your eternal, err, rival since Red & Blue, and getting to turn the tables would put a great twist on the game. Imagine palling around with Team Rocket, trying to pull off heists and capers, doing whatever it takes to win.

The only problem here is that being a cold jerk to your Pokemon goes against everything the series stands for; and without the underlying message of love and companionship, the game wanders dangerously close to Michael Vick territory. Perhaps you could be a roguish bad boy/girl who loves mischief AND their Pokemon. The other problem is that this idea is so awesome that no one would bother to buy the White version!

6. Exclusive hidden Digimon

Likelihood: No

Just no.

A different storyline would make the series better... How exactly remains enigmatic. Let's just hope that it's different than the traditional method (8 Gym Leaders, Elite 4, etc).

It would be awesomoe to have a TRUE RPG style of gameplay. Your actions in the game would determine what you would have to do in the story. Kinda' like Fable or (ironicaly) the game Black & White

what if it is announced that bioware is codevoloping the games? that would sure shake things up

Here is an idea: What if you are inbetween Team Rocket and the Professer? You care about your pokes, but you want to help the bad guys. It could start off with you getting the starter, but then turn around and attack the dude who gave it to you. Then you join the bad guys, but in the end you'd defeat them.

I have a great idea. What if there was a Co-op type deal going on? Like say the entire Pokemon world was linked up to people around you via Wifi (ie: the underground). you could tackle the whole game alone, or travel around as a group of friends. This would also eliminate any need for pokemon center wifi rooms. i honestly think this should be the next big step in pokemon. just imagine being able to actually hang out in pokemon, instead of just playing it.

i actually stopped playing pokemon because i had beaten all the games and eventually i ended up getting bored with it. then i bought an action replay for it and even started making my own pokemon games too, using my computer. but eventually i got bored again and i stopped playing it. i will probably get this one because it looks ok, but i hope it ends up done right. (as in a lot of new ideas)

  • Psylockerules - June 2, 2010 11:52 a.m.

im happy theres 3d at last and my god animation! seriously the GBA did that beutifully with Golden Sun for christs sake! i dont understand why they dont add the voice samples from the cartoon, would sound a hell of a lot better than the ear bleeding noises they have now. its not a lot to ask is it?
  • Corsair89 - June 2, 2010 7:01 a.m.

I've always wanted to play the bad guys in Pokemon. That would be so awesome.
  • QWERTYCommander - June 2, 2010 6:51 a.m.

    Customizable trainers would be nice.
  • n00b - June 2, 2010 6:08 a.m.

i remember in red/blue team rocket was giving you the chance to join them. sadly you didn't even get a chance to decide for your self. so 5 would be awesome. it would be kinda cool though if in white you played the rival for black and vice versa with separate intertwining stories
  • Lilrockerdude - June 2, 2010 4:14 a.m.

Give us a character creator! Being able to have more trainer options would be better than just Male or Female that look the same and a more unique pose. All the Gym leaders in battle get a unique animation, so in a linked battle do like a super jump in the air or being able to point at your enemy something more than just standing. Also let a partner follow us for a small period of time like Ash picked up Misty and Brock but would switch out friends every so often. Some of the first Gym leaders would be awesome partners for a couple hours. And yes make Team rocket or whoever the team is be more involved than just oh yeah we are here kick our ass and move on. Sapphire and Ruby had you foil plans of another team and this worked so good cause I felt like I get to be part of the bad guys for an hour or two. Oh and more tournament style battles like in the original series where Ash is forced to using one to a few pokemon a battle. This would give Vets more of challenge and new comers feel like they are more like Ash.
  • WillisTron - June 2, 2010 4:05 a.m.

With every 'list' article you guys do the last entry is always a complete joke. It's not always bad, just totally predictable
  • Cwf2008 - June 2, 2010 3:29 a.m.

I would love to be able to join Team Rocket! Come on Nintendo join the 21st century...most RPGs let you be the bad guy now
