Off-screen Battlemap only on next-gen and PC for Battlefield 4

Battlefield 4's second-screen map tracker (creatively called Battlemap) is just too fancy for current-gen systems. Electronic Arts detailed the new features in store for the next version of Battlelog to Engadget, revealing that Battlefield 4 will only support using mobile devices to keep an eye on the map on next-gen consoles and PC.

Why the difference? The new and improved Battlelog is built on the web, instead of a bespoke platform for both consoles, so it's nearly the same experience across PC, PS4, and Xbox One. It isn't so easy to run web services through PS3 and Xbox 360, but they'll still get the standard stat tracking and customization.

Don't throw your smartphone out the window just because it can't do Battlemap on current-gen; for one thing, it's still a perfectly good smartphone, and for another, you can use the Battlelog app to log into your Origin account and start playing faster. How? By scanning a QR code direct from the game, duh.

Do you think you'll make much use of Battlefield 4's mobile features?

This is just silly. The whole point of having a HUD in a game is so that you don't have to look away from the screen to get critical information...so they're introducing a "great new feature" where not only can your wife not use the tablet for Netflix / Facebook / Whatever while you're already hogging the TV, but you have to look away from the screen to get vital information?

oh okay, I thought you meant they weren't having this battle map feature on Wii U.

Kinda sucks considering the Wii U can run PC textures and is the first 1080p console (see Need for Speed: Most Wanted on Wii U. They said it was running PC textures at the console's native 1080p resolution and in tandem with the tablet controller features makes it the superior version of the game). It's more powerful than the 360 and PS3 (which merely run games at 720p fuzzy vision), but apparently not as powerful as their next iterations.

Also, just stating the obvious, but BF4's tablet integration features could go just swimmingly with the U's tablet controller. Considering what I just stated, I don't see why they wouldn't do it seeing as people already have the U in their homes.

The one place where second-screen can be passable [You still have to look away from the main screen, but at least you won't have an angry wife glaring at you for hogging the tablet *and* the TV], and they're passing on the platform. Smooth.

    Nope, not really.
