Zabriskie Point review

Antonioni's cult 1970 release returns to cinemas

Life’s a drag... especially for bummed-out hippies Mark (Mark Frechette) and Daria (Daria Halprin), fleeing cop-infested L.A. for an extended orgy of sex ‘n’ talk in Death Valley. Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1970 film was once regarded as a misfire for its awkward meeting of bubblegum banality and existential ennui.

Today, it’s this collision which makes it so intriguing. With a visual audacity and a literally explosive climax, it’s at once a fascinating time capsule of late-’60s flower power and a key step in the migration of European arthouse ideas to ’70s Hollywood.
