With relations between Iran and the United States at a decidedly frosty level, it’s probably best that the new drama Universal is developing with uber-producer Brian Grazer is set in the past.
The studio and Grazer’s Imagine company have snatched up the rights to Tehran, a spec script penned by Richard Regan that follows an American professor hired by the government to watch the political tensions in the country back in 1977. He discovers a political minefield, which he then steps right into by falling for a girl whose brother works for the secret police. Way to go, prof.
Variety is deep under cover , and hoping the script doesn’t spark some sort of international incident.
