Young Jean Grey is very different in X-Men: Apocalypse

Jean Grey took a well-deserved break from the X-Men movies after that whole "perishing utterly" thing in 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand. But the franchise's recent time-altering hijinks have given her a proper return, and a younger self portrayed by Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner. Turner told Entertainment Weekly that her take on the young psychic in X-Men: Apocalypse will differ quite a bit from the confident Jean Grey we've seen on the silver screen so far.

“The difference between this and Famke [Janssen's] Jean Grey is she’s young and isolated and so insecure and very alienated - even from the other mutants - because she’s so powerful," Turner said. "So there’s a real vulnerability to her and it’s great to see how her and Scott [Tye Sheridan] find each other through that alienation. She’s a great role to play, she’s so much fun, and her arc in the movie is amazing”.

Mutants feeling alienated and isolated does tend to cause issues, as demonstrated by Magneto, Mystique, and pretty much every other on-again, off-again X-Men villain. Hopefully she can stay out of trouble while fighting Apocalypse, the most powerful foe ever seen in the 20th Century Fox film franchise. Whatever hijinks Jean Grey gets up to in the '80s, at least we know she'll still have a place at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters in the future.

Directed by Bryan Singer and starring Jennifer Lawrence, Hugh Jackman, Sophie Turner, and Michael Fassbender, X-Men: Apocalypse will hit UK theatres on May 19 and open in the US on May 26.
