It’s probably not too much of an understatement to say that Game of Thrones season 7 and its final season will be one of the great television events of our time. But imagine being part of the phenomenon. Must be pretty intense, right? Some of the Game of Thrones cast have add their say about filming season 7 and looking to the future – and it’s being described as everything from “absolute chaos” to, uhh, being on drugs. Warning: There are lots and lots of emotions.
Speaking to Mashable, some key characters have opened up as the HBO show hits the final stretch. Here’s what Liam Cunningham, Alfie Allen and Jacob Anderson, otherwise known as Ser Davos, Theon Greyjoy and Grey Worm have to say about their experience.
Ser Davos: "It must be like trying to get off drugs"
Never one to mince his words on the show, Liam Cunningham is just as forthright off it, explaining the worry the cast are feeling whilst filming the penultimate season: “I know we’re all feeling [the anxiety] on set… we’re one [season] ahead of you – and we’re now in the position where it must be like trying to get off drugs. We’re easing ourselves off drugs gently, our drug is the show.”
Cunningham also explains how the impending end has affected the atmosphere on set, stating, “Because we know we’re coming to an end, and what we’ve been filming in season 7 – without giving anything away – things are coming to a head… it can be, occasionally, a little odd on set.”
Grey Worm: "It doesn't feel like... a normal season. It feels bigger"
Jacob Anderson, like Cunningham, has been hanging out at the fringes of the main action in previous years but it looks like it’s going to be full steam ahead for the commander of the Unsullied in season 7. Anderson shares in Liam the opinion that it’s all getting a bit much for cast and crew, “It doesn’t feel like a panic, but I’m panicked for people,” before adding, “I think… you can feel things are coming to a close. It’s all getting a bit much. The show’s kind of like a pressure cooker… it’s just absolute chaos.”
The big news for season 7 (apart from the possible leaked release date) is that there are only seven episodes compared to the traditional ten – and the final season might be even shorter. Anderson simply can’t believe how the showrunners have managed to squeeze everything in, "I’m just in awe of how everybody’s managing to fit as much as there is into seven episodes, because it doesn’t necessarily feel like a normal season, it feels bigger.”
Theon: "There's definitely a feeling of 'it's coming to an end'"
Alfie Allen, though, has been there from the very beginning and can offer a unique take on the end of an era, and he’s aiming right for our tear ducts, "In terms of the pace of it, it’s been pretty much the same, but there’s definitely a feeling of… 'it’s coming to an end "It’s kind of crazy. It’s sad for us, because we’re not going to get to hang out as much." Aww.
Allen ended things by offering up a teaser for the season as a whole, "It’s gonna be a crazy season. It’s definitely going to blow a lot of people’s minds.”
Oh boy, this is going to be amazing.
