The stuff of nightmares

The stuff of nightmares

Capcom's Resident Evil may be one of the longest running horror franchises today, but the demented minds designing the horrible manifestations you constantly have to fight clearly have never-ending nightmares. How else can you explain the escalating level of grotesqueness the protagonists encounter each and every game?

From animal/human hybrids to Tetsuo-like mutations, the Resident Evil series has provided us with a host of terrifying demons we'll never get out of our heads. With that in mind, and in anticipation of Resident Evil 6's release, we've put together this compilation of Resident Evil's worst, nastiest, most cringe-inducing monsters even Clive Barker would balk at creating.

Tyrant

Tyrant

First appearance: Resident Evil

While there are certainly much more vile-looking monsters on this list, let's face it--nobody is taking Tyrant to the Winter Formal with that face. Or those lesions. Or those organs on the outside of his body. That's probably why he's always trying to chase people down; he's just looking for a little love and appreciation.

Globster

Globster

First appearance:Resident Evil: Revelations

Globsters may look rather harmless--considering they have the mobility of a beached whale--and can only cause any real damage from close range, but they're actually pretty fearsome foes. Created by the T-Abyss virus, these putrid pink blobs are ineffective on the ground, but a dangerous enemy to encounter underwater. The globsters helped themselves to many a drowning victim the day Terragrigia was destroyed, which is probably why they're still so fat and gross.

The real reason these guys are so cringe-worthy though is their resemblance to a certain part of the female anatomy when upright. We're not going to say what part of the anatomy, but we will say that, in our experiences, that part isn't supposed to be so scary, and it's certainly not supposed to have teeth. No wonder Chris Redfield hasn't been with a lady in quite some time. We can't blame him.

Ooze

Ooze

First appearance: Resident Evil: Revelations

Another of the T-Abyss mutations, the Ooze is one of the creepiest monsters in any Resident Evil game. A few variants exist, but the grossest is easily the common humanoid. Its awkward movements coupled with the lack of facial features makes it really hard to look in the eyes (mainly because it doesn't have any). Plus, once it actually opens its mouth, a giant tentacle comes out to try and suck all the fluids from your body.

Upon closer inspection, the pasty white sliminess certainly goes a long way in making the Ooze one thing we don't want to bump into in the night. And that Chunk variant may be a close second to the common Ooze solely based on the fact that is looks like a walking zit about to burst nasty zombie goop all over us. No amount of sanitizer is going to help you get over that.

Nemesis

Nemesis

First appearance: Resident Evil 3: Nemesis

Remember when we said there were a few variations on the Tyrant? Nemesis is one of those, but he's very unique in that there's only been one in all of Resident Evil to this point. That's probably a good thing too, as in addition to being incredibly tough to take down, he's also pretty darn tough to look at.

With a face only a Cenobite could love, Nemesis found himself the Beast to Jill Valentine's Beauty in Resident Evil 3. His other two transformations definitely ratchet up the grossness quite a bit, but they have to considering the starting point is so horrendous. Nemesis has reappeared in games like Umbrella Chronicles and Operation: Raccoon City, and the improvement in graphics has only made his disposition even more unfortunate.

Queen Leech

Queen Leech

First appearance: Resident Evil Zero

Plenty of monsters in Resident Evil have a tenticular disposition, but most of them aren't leeches that became self-aware after exposure to the Progenitor virus. Instead of just growing into some kind of giant leech monster, this leech attempted to merge with the DNA of its deceased owner. It took a few years, but thanks to good ol' Umbrella magic, the leech successfully mixed with Dr. James Marcus, creating the revolting mess of suckers you see before you now.

Now fortunately for Rebecca Chambers, the Queen Leech never saw the light of day... well, she did, but then she died. Being deathly allergic to sunlight may make Queen Leech a pushover, but she's still one ugly pushover.

Uroboros

Uroboros

First appearance: Resident Evil 5

The Uroboros virus' debut was a horrifying one. The disgust continued to escalate every time the virus was injected into someone new, but the first stable infected Chris and Sheva encountered in Kijuju is a hot, tangled mess of yuck. Queen Leech was bad, but the Uroboros here looks like the clog in the bearded lady's sink came to life, and wants to eat your soul.

Again though, it's really the incredible mass of tentacles that makes this guy so revolting. It's so unnatural, and the rhythmic wriggling of all the various parts just makes you want to hurl.

Ogroman

Ogroman

First appearance: Resident Evil 6

We haven't seen many of the monsters that will be causing trouble in Resident Evil 6, but the most disgusting we've so far is hands down the Ogroman. Dude looks like somebody dumped a vat of boiling-hot wax over King Kong, and then set him loose in Eastern Europe. Ogroman's about three stories tall, so you know you're going to see some truly awful anatomy hidden beneath that stretched-too-far skin.

The kicker here is the giant tumor on Ogroman's back. Had this just been some simple overgrown simian putting on the ritz, it may not have been so bad. The pulsating growth is not easy on the eyes, and combined with the rest of Ogroman's personal style, makes him one of the roughest characters in the franchise.

Duvalia

Duvalia

First appearance: Resident Evil 5

The Duvalia is a real piece of work. A byproduct of the Plaga parasite, this bad boy breaks free from the containment of its host's skin from the waist up. While the skin and bones of the host hang off the Duvalia's back like a really unsanitary cape, the new torso reveals itself. Right until it's about to attack, the Duvalia looks like a closed up shellfish. Get too close though, and bam, it turns into a giant mouth that just wants to eat you.

The Duvalia is almost just a full-bodied representation of the Predator mouth, though this version is way more disgusting since it's six feet-tall. Imagine being chased around by a mobile Sarlacc pit. That's what this must be like.

G/William Birkin

G/William Birkin

First appearance: Resident Evil 2

It's one thing to love your work. It's another thing entirely to inject yourself with the G-Virus to exact revenge on your bosses for trying to kill you. That's just what William Birkin did, and as you can plainly see, it didn't exactly work out for him. Changing from regular, mild-mannered scientist to an overgrown monstrosity with an eyeball for a shoulder isn't exactly an upgrade, even if you were about to die.

Seriously though, Birkin's transformation into "G" was obviously painful, and the end result is really revolting. Birkin's transformations kept happening too, with his final form turning him into a giant slug with crazy teeth and, you guessed it, tentacles. We'd feel bad for Sherry, but honestly, she's better off. It's not like grade school has a "Bring Your Father Who Turned Into a Mutated Monster With a Giant Eye-Shoulder, and Tried to Kill You to School Day."

Scagdead

Scagdead

First appearance: Resident Evil: Revelations

As if the Ooze wasn't a gross enough monster to have to fight in the tight confines of an oceanliner, Capcom went ahead and dropped the Scagdead into play. Let's disregard the boneshield hand for just one second, and instead focus on the fact that Scagdead looks like it just rolled off the set of John Carpenter's The Thing. Whatever transformation the T-Abyss virus caused here not only turned the host into a fat, stump-legged killing machine, but it also gave it a giant mouth for a head. Well, a second head anyway.

Scagdead looks like the worst nightmare Abby and Brittany ever had. Just imagine what it was like to be sitting on the pool deck, sipping on a pina colada, when suddenly Scagdead emerges from pool like Phoebe Cates in Fast Times. One ticket to Vomit City, please.

U-3

U-3

First appearance: Resident Evil 4

Let's tally up all the things really wrong about this monster. Hands for feet? Check. Giant pincer springing from the back? Double check. Crazy tentacle arm? Ew, check. Insect thorax for a body? You'd better believe that's a check. A crazy long tongue sprouting from its mouth? Check, checkity check check. How anyone can look at U-3 and not immediately hurl is beyond us. Obviously you'd never want to be caught in a dark alley with any of the monsters on this list, but U-3 is particularly horrifying in ways the other mutations can only dream of.

Thankfully there's only been one of these seen in any of the Resident Evil games so far. Having to look at U-3 repeatedly wouldn't be good for our psyche. At least the original chimaera was a cool lion/snake/goat thing. The U-3 doesn't have a single redeeming quality, and was in fact voted "Horrible Chimera-Like Thing Most Likely to Give Leon Night Terrors" by his classmates at Los Illuminados High.

Nyx

Nyx

First appearance: Resident Evil: Outbreak

Of all the terrors in Resident Evil to make you wince, Nyx is the cream of the crop. Any an all arguments otherwise are solved by Nyx sucking anyone with a dissenting opinion into his body. And once more, look at all those tentacles. That's just... ugh... it's too much.

We've shared the demons that keep us up at night, but there are still dozens of other monsters in Resident Evil that just missed the cut. Did we miss one of your favorites? Do you think there's another beast that's more shudder worthy? Let us know in the comments below.
