Cronenberg turned down True Detective's "bad" script. A TV director's "just a traffic cop"

David Cronenberg could have been the latest in a long line of movie directors to turn his hand to small screen drama, with the auteur telling Indiewire that he was offered the chance to direct a pair of episodes for True Detective season 2. However, Cronenberg turned the offer down, slamming the script and comparing the role of a TV director to being “a traffic cop”.

"The heat is in TV,” conceded Cronenberg. “Last year I was approached to direct the first episode of the second season of True Detective. I considered it but I thought that the script was bad, so I didn’t do it. In TV, the director is just a traffic cop, but on the other hand it is work and there’s a lot of it.”

A fairly damning assessment there, although when it comes to the True Detective S2 script, he’s not alone in his opinion. Justin Lin would eventually go on to take the gig, although it would definitely have been interesting to see what Cronenberg would have brought to the table… maybe he can be persuaded when round three inevitably arrives on the horizon.
