One of the best things about the Marvel Cinematic Universe is that they explore many different genres within their superhero movies; Ant-Man was all about pulling off a heist, while Captain America: The Winter Soldier was a political thriller. According to Joe Russo, Captain America: Civil War is going to be a love story... but not that kind of love story!
The trailers for Civil War have highlighted the deep bond between Captain America and Bucky, and while speaking with Empire Russo explained that "What’s fascinating about the Cap-Bucky story as well is it’s a love story. These are two guys who grew up together, and so they have that same emotional connection to each other as brothers would, and even more so because Bucky was all Steve had growing up."
While Sebastian Stan didn't quite go as far on the "love story" angle, he did liken Bucky and Cap's friendship to Will Smith and Martin Lawrence's relationship in the Bad Boys movies.
"I think it’s easy and generalising it to say that they’re lovers, when you’re forgetting that one has a lot of guilt because he swore to be the protector of the other, the father figure or older brother so to speak, and then left him behind. "I have no qualms with it but I think people like to see it much more as a love story than it actually is. It’s brotherhood to me." Sorry fanfic authors!
Directed by Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, and starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey, Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chadwick Boseman, Tom Holland, Anthony Mackie, and Sebastian Stan, Captain America: Civil War opens in UK cinemas on April 29, 2016 and May 6, 2016 in the US.
