Check out the first teaser for SPECTRE below. Much like Bond himself, we've done some spy work of our own to explain what the key moments mean. Click through to take a look.

MI6 headquarters is still showing the after-effects of Silva's bomb in Skyfall. Presumably not much time has passed since the last movie.

Messages from the past

Naomie Harris's Eve Moneypenny presents Bond with some family effects that survived the assault on his family home at Skyfall. "You've got a secret," she says. "Something you can't tell anyone. Because you don't trust anyone."

What's in the box?

What's in the box?

The contents of that box are very interesting. It looks like the court order detailing custody arrangements for Bond after the death of his parents when he was 12 years old. The legal guardian is Charmian Bond, 007's aunt in the novels. The temporary guardian? Someone called Oberhauser which is also the name of the character played by Christoph Waltz in the movie. (In Ian Fleming's novels, Oberhauser was a ski instructor in Austria.)

And here's the photo in close-up. Presumably that's a young 007 on the left. Who's the chap in the middle? Oberhauser? Bond's dad?

A suitably Alpine backdrop it looks like Bond's following the clues Moneypenny gave him, and is on his way to a remote lakeside lodge.

The spectre of SPECTRE

The spectre of SPECTRE

"I was in a meeting recently and your name came up," says Bond as he arrives in a lodge that's clearly seen better days. "I'm flattered London is still talking about me," says a mystery voice. "It wasn't MI6..." replies Bond, as he hands over a ring bearing the familiar SPECTRE logo.

The White stuff

The White stuff

The voice over the trailer belongs to Quantum bigwig Mr White (Jesper Christensen), last seen at the opera in Quantum Of Solace. It looks like he's living in hiding, has seen better days, and is rather scared at the sight of that SPECTRE insignia. "You're a kite dancing in a hurricane, Mr Bond."

Dragon's den

And so Bond arrives in a room where a group of people are sitting around the sort of giant table where dastardly schemes are traditionally hatched. As a music box-style rendition of the Bond theme plays in the background, at the table's head sits a silhouetted man who sounds a lot like Christoph Waltz.

"Welcome James. It's been a long time. And finally, here we are..." Looks like Bond and Oberhauser have history.

The first official trailer for new James Bond movie, SPECTRE, has exploded online. Dispensing with the traditional Bond action and bombast, it's a more subtle tease of a promo that sees Bond confronted by a cryptic message from his past when Moneypenny presents him with effects from his former family home, Skyfall – including a photo that seems to hold a lot of (familial?) resonance. There's also a signet ring bearing a familiar Octopussy logo...

All that sends Bond on a mission to track down the mysterious organisation from which the film takes its name. Along the way he takes in Alpine vistas, a natter with not-quite-so-dapper-as-before Quantum bigwig Mr White, what looks like a funeral, a very nice Aston Martin, and a shadowy figure who sounds a lot like Christoph Waltz – and seems to have history with 007...

Take a look at the new trailer below, and let the speculation commence!

Directed by Sam Mendes and co-starring Daniel Craig, Christoph Waltz, Lea Seydoux and Monica Bellucci, SPECTRE will open in the UK on October 23, 2015 and the US on November 6, 2015.
