ARK: Survival Evolved is a crowd-pleaser. People love survival games right now. Dinosaurs have got their mojo back. We all love shooting things. Combining the three was always going to work - and ARK has reportedly become Steam Early Access' fastest-growing game of all time as a result. Apparently, it's pretty great.
That's heartening news for those of us waiting for a full console release, and we get the added bonus of seeing tantalising new features as they're added to the game - this week's a bit special. In honour of Jurassic World's release, Studio Wildcard has set up the Jurassic ARK update week, running contests every day and adding a variety of goodies just different enough from the film series so as not to be sued ("Nerdry's Glasses", hmm?).
The best addition, however, comfortably outstrips the Spielberg series for stupidity. The game previously allowed flying creatures to pick up humans - now they can pick up anything. This means you can now drop dinosaurs on other dinosaurs, which is more or less the greatest artistic image ever conjured.
In fact, the patch notes themselves offer a hint as to just how silly this can get: "Flyers can now carry other dinosaurs, not just humans. C4-Packing Dodo Air Drop anyone?" GROTESQUE, LIVING BOMBS, PEOPLE. There's no footage of such an act just yet, but by god if I'm not keeping an eye out for it.
The game will arrive on console next year, and that seems entirely too long to wait.
