Very few concrete details so far, but if the CG trailer shown at Microsoft’s E3 2016 conference is anything to go by, State of Decay might be taking its new set of ramshackle zombie survivors on a road trip.
The trailer starts out rather slapstick, with a gore drenched muscle car containing three heroes swiping and splattering roadside zombies willy-nilly. When we get into the on-foot action though, things get a whole lot more desolate. Decaying towns, small bands of (rapidly executed) flesh-munching ferals, and a whole lot of empty landscape imply a very wide, open-world experience, with car travel appearing again at the end to potentially hint at a great deal of driving between (presumably) building and maintaining the series’ signature survival camps.
It’s also notable that at the end, the protagonists look to be responding to a far-off distress flair. Will camp maintenance be a more transient affair this time around, with players perhaps travelling far and wide to help manage a wider network? Or maybe it’s a nod to the fact that this time around you’ll be interacting with other players through online multiplayer - just revealed in the trailer’s YouTube blurb? We have little more but guesses at the moment, but more details will hopefully land as E3 goes on.
