PS3 launch: The crucial info on Sony's box

How do PS3's controllers work?
Motion sensors inside the controller - which are called Sixaxis - detect how you're holding the pad so, for example, in a flying game if you tilt it back, your plane will ascend. There are loads of uses for this and it's up to developers to discover them when they make their games. It's sort of like Nintendo's Wii, but slightly less flexible. On the downside, PS3 controllers no longer support the rumble feature.

How many controllers come with the console?
Just the one.

How much do extra controllers cost?
A new Sixaxis pad costs £34.99 (49.99 euros).

What's HD?
It stands for high definition which, providing you have a telly that supports HD, gives PS3's games pin-sharp, PC monitor-style graphics. HD is quickly becoming the standard, so PS3 is a perfect introduction to the world of high definition.

Do I have to buy a new TV?
Obviously to get the full benefit of those HD graphics, you'll have to get a telly with either a Component or HDMI port in the back. But you can still get away with a regular RGB SCART, and it's still appreciably better than PS2. You can get a 24 inch HD TV for about £500, but prices are expected to drop.
