Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II-IV) reworks Charles Kaufman’s 1980 Troma schlocker – itself a Texas Chain Saw, Last House On The Left , Friday The 13th hybrid – into a torture-heavy home-invasion thriller.

Moments of ill-advised irony aside, a taut-faced Rebecca De Mornay impresses as the composedly nutty matriarch who leads her three sons and daughter (True Blood’s Deborah Ann Woll) in terrorising a middle-class party.

Too long and with too many characters to get through, Mother’s Day holds effective sequences, ramming home its (recycled) message: the animal lurks in us all.
