Xbox 360 games are reportedly coming to PC this year as Microsoft prepares disc-to-digital conversion for an upcoming launch
Disc-to-digital Xbox games are seemingly coming very soon
Alongside Microsoft's rumored disc-to-digital plan, the company is reportedly bringing Xbox 360 games to PC as part of an expanded emulation rollout this year.
A leaked roadmap shared online and corroborated by The Verge indicates that Xbox 360 games will be playable through emulation on next-gen console Project Helix, PC, and compatible handheld PCs.
The roadmap suggests PC backwards compatibility will fully launch in October, with Xbox 360 catalog integration coming in waves throughout 2027 and 2028. Bear in mind that it's unclear how these timelines may have shifted within Microsoft.
Last month, Xbox announced a new backwards compatibility program which, so far, has seen four classic Xbox games come to PC. This Xbox 360 program appears to be an extension of this work.
This follows word that Xbox Project Helix will play PC games and is even more PC-like in its architecture.
Microsoft's emulator on PC, regarded quite solidly by some in terms of sheer performance for the original Xbox games released so far, will seemingly handle all the legwork. The roadmap says Microsoft will handle certification and compatibility testing, store listings, player support, updates, and maintenance for "local PC execution" (not cloud or streaming) emulation.
Devs will seemingly only need to sort out commercial details like "price, Game Pass, promotions," and availability or opt-ins.

The same roadmap says public testing for the rumored disc-to-digital conversion, which would purportedly give owners of physical Xbox games an entitlement tied to their exact disc but stored in a digital library, was meant to begin in July – right alongside "Back Compat early access (Original Xbox titles)," which lines up with the aforementioned PC releases for those four classic games.
"Disc to Digital General Availability" is listed for an August 2026 launch for "all Xbox One & Series X owners," so if this timeline hasn't changed dramatically, we should be in for an announcement soon.
This Xbox push for digital availability comes on the heels of PlayStation declaring the end of discs. By abandoning physical games, fumbling its announcement, failing to address player concerns, refusing to act on digital rights, and generally playing the silent game, Sony has somehow handed Microsoft a shot at the kind of PR slam dunk that the PS4 enjoyed in the 2010s with the notorious Xbox One DRM fiasco.
It would be stupid to celebrate one calamitous company and praise another in the same breath, and a lot of questions remain unanswered here, including about Microsoft's own future physical game support. Yet with expanded emulation, availability, and digital ownership, Xbox may well be off to a better start than PlayStation.
