First revealed during a January livestream, version 3.1 is the next chapter in Wuthering Waves' epic sci-fi story. With a new main quest, two new Resonators, a remote region to explore, and a wealth of new content, it's no stretch to say that it's one of the most substantial updates in the game's short but prestigious history.

The 3.1 update shot Wuthering Waves to the top of the bestseller charts on Steam, where the game currently holds an impressive 91% 'Very Positive' rating from nearly 40,000 reviews. The latest update looks to build on a strong 2025 for the ever-evolving RPG, during which it won the fan-voted TGA Players' Voice Award and PlayStation Partner and Users' Choice Awards, as well as Best Original Song at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards for "Against the Tide".

At the heart of the update are the Roya Frostlands. Reachable only by the giant elevator built into the Exostrider's greatsword, the Frostlands are a place where icebergs and rock formations jut jaggedly like broken teeth from frozen waters, vast caverns play host to towering purple frost mushrooms, and a flowering tree blooms over a stillwater lake that somehow defies the region's climate by not freezing over.

Beyond the geography, intrepid Rovers will find snippets of story about the world before the Lament, the cataclysmic event that tore the sky asunder and brought the hostile Tacet Discords into the world. Environmental storytelling will unveil fragments of the past for observant players, with scattered data and subtle visual cues, such as fallen satellites and space stations, pocking the landscape. Deep in the Frostlands, you'll find a research outpost of the Spacetrek Collective, where remnants of humanity attempt to gain a greater understanding of this unforgiving environment.

Aemeath from Wuthering Waves

The mysterious Aemeath comes to the fore in Version 3.1, building on her enigmatic appearance in 3.0 to become a playable Resonator this time round. A striking fusion of 'mecha' and idol singer, she can pilot a mech in combat and even merge with it, granting you temporary flight abilities within the Lahai-Roi region. Aemeath emerges as one of the game's most powerful DPS characters, showcasing Kuro's strengths in character and combat design.

Aemeath will play a central role in 3.1's main quest, as players uncover her past before she became a "digital ghost" and revisit narrative threads that players have been waiting to weave together since Version 3.0. Her origin story will reveal a more vulnerable side of Rover too, delving deeper into the protagonist and breaking new emotional ground through their nuanced relationship that—if all the "crying" comments are anything to go by—left the game's communities on Reddit and YouTube dewy-eyed and emotionally invested.
