Ubisoft is planning a new, "more adventurous 3D Rayman" game – but only if "everything goes well" with its Rayman Legends Retold remake
"I think what we're seeing now with Astro Bot, with new 3D platformers, there is a rebirth of the golden age of PS2-ish platformers"
One Rayman lead at Ubisoft says that a new 3D Rayman is hopefully going to happen eventually, although it's not confirmed to be the next game in the series.
Speaking to GamesRadar+, Rayman Legends Retold brand producer Loïc Gounon explains that when Rayman Origins released, there was a trend of "smaller games, more agile 2D, multiplayer" with the likes of New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Donkey Kong Country Returns.
"I think what we're seeing now with Astro Bot, with new 3D platformers, there is a rebirth of the golden age of PS2-ish platformers," he explains, adding: "If you look back at the franchise, it's basically Rayman 2, Rayman 3 that were in that era.
"We think it might be the time to come back with more adventurous 3D Rayman games," Gounon continues. "We are starting with that project [Rayman Legends Retold], that's what we are aiming for, in a way, and what we want for Rayman, and we think it's a good match, both for the players and the market."
When asked if the thing the team sees next for Rayman is a return to the fully 3D style found in earlier games, Gounon says, "that's the plan! That will be the plan if everything goes well!" He adds, "We are setting up a new team. We're resetting the foundation for the franchise. That's why also being – even though we are a bit more than a remake – being partially a remake, there are some solid grounds where we felt it was a good way to bring back the franchise."
So yes, Rayman Legends is a confusing choice for a game to remake, but as a means to bring back the series for a true 3D Rayman 4 – that we've been waiting for since the mid 2000's when the real Rayman 4 (which Gounon also worked on) became Rayman Raving Rabbids – I'm more than happy to support it.
A Rayman 1 remake is basically "mission impossible" for Ubisoft, Legends Retold producer says.
