Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is no more, with the spin-off show canceled just days after season 1 wrapped up.
Variety broke the news that the show will end with season 2: the second season was given the go ahead before season 1 debuted. Season 1 finished on March 12.
While season 1 scored an impressive 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, Variety indicates that it struggled to find its footing with viewership, so it's perhaps not a huge surprise that the show is coming to an end. Plus, the audience score was a much lower 51%.
Our own Starfleet Academy season 1 review was positive, awarding the show 4 stars: "Class is in session! Holly Hunter and Paul Giamatti are notable standouts in a sprawling cast, but Starfleet Academy's heart belongs to its conflicted younger characters. It's arguably trying to do too much at once, but it successfully reinvents what a Star Trek show can be in the franchise's 60th year."
"We're incredibly proud of the ambition, passion, and creativity that went into bringing Star Trek: Starfleet Academy to life," said CBS Studios and Paramount Plus. "The series introduced audiences to a bold new group of characters, welcomed familiar faces, and expanded the Star Trek universe in exciting new ways. We're grateful to Alex Kurtzman, Noga Landau, Gaia Violo, and the entire cast and crew who pushed storytelling boundaries in the spirit of Gene Roddenberry's vision. We look forward to sharing the upcoming second and final season with everyone, and continuing to celebrate the cast, crew, and all that was accomplished with this series."
