Upcoming horror movie Backrooms is already diving into the internet phenomenon's origins as fans find links between the recent poster and the original 4chan post.
On March 30, A24 posted two new Backrooms posters featuring stars Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, with the caption "If you're not careful." However, one eagle-eyed horror fan pointed out on Twitter that the caption is taken from the original post on 4chan, which reads, "If you're not careful and you noclip out of reality in the wrong areas, you'll end up in the backrooms. Check out the post below.
Mind blown by the fact that the start of the original text has been integrated into the official post for the posters.“If you’re not careful and you noclip out of reality…”Whoever is doing the marketing for A24 has taken their time to reference the origin of the Backrooms. https://t.co/7ThL2UGHBo pic.twitter.com/85ZnywNGsZMarch 30, 2026
The studio used another quote from the 4chan post alongside the first teaser, which reads, "You are not supposed to be here." As for the new posters, star Mark Duplass shared the same set of artwork over on his Twitter page, but you may notice that they differ in colour from A24's post. Many think this is a reference to the different iterations of the backrooms, which often include varying hues of yellow.
But it goes way deeper than that, as another fan spotted some blue tape in one of the posters. Some fans think this is a reference to the album cover for Everywhere at the End of Time by The Caretaker, which was influenced by the Backrooms. Others say the painters' tape mimics the same squares of tape found in the series of short films posted on YouTube by Kane Parsons, as he is also directing the movie. Parson's videos took viewers through the backrooms and were shot like a found footage movie.
If you have gotten this far and have no idea what the backrooms are, let us fill you in. In 2019, a 4chan user posted a creepy picture of a dimly lit, empty yellow room alongside a story about glitching out of reality and ending up in the liminal maze known as the backrooms. Over time, more and more creators started to post content about the story, known as a creepypasta, evolving the dimension and how to escape it.
The upcoming movie is based on this story. A24 is keeping plot details tightly under wraps, but when the first trailer drops on March 31, we should know more about how the studio is going to bring the creepypasta to life. The movie is written by Will Soodik and also stars Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell, and Avan Jogia.
Backrooms releases on May 29, 2026. For more, check out our guide to all the upcoming horror movies heading our way.
