The best CRPGs are united by their ability to immerse players. Whether isometric or first-person, real-time or turn-based, the medium is built upon universes and systems that draw its audience – that's you – far below its cogs and code; enveloped not in the game but in its world.

Reactivity reigns supreme, and your path is shaped by the choices made and consequences suffered along the way. For you and I, the first step on this journey is deciding which CRPG to play. Luckily, we're in the midst of a CRPG renaissance – with more and more developers realizing how much this genre has to offer – and that means there are oodles of fantastic games to choose from.

I've included where you can play these picks as well as what kind of vibe you can expect from each (check out our FAQ for more on that). Whether you're craving a voyage across the stars, another foray into fantasy, or want to pit a hungover detective's endurance against an uncomfortable chair, below I've picked the 10 best CRPGs playable on modern platforms.

The best CRPGs, starting with...

10. Baldur's Gate 3

The character creation suite in Baldur's Gate 3 showing a sorcerer dragonborn playable character, with the menu to select a subclass

Release date: August 3, 2026
Platform(s): PC, PS5, Xbox Series X
Vibe: Story-driven

Baldur's Gate 3 is a CRPG set within the world of Dungeons & Dragons, making it the perfect game for those craving a more traditional fantasy adventure. An ocean of variables ensures no two journeys to rid yourself of an Ilithid parasite are alike, but the true magic of Baldur's Gate 3 is how flexibly its world reacts to your decisions – at a narrative level, yes, but also mechanically.

I've played Baldur's Gate 3 for a little over 265 hours, and I'm still surprised at how consistently it rewards initiative. As detailed in our Baldur's Gate 3 review, this is a world where chairs are potent weapons in the hands of a quick-thinking Barbarian, pushing enemies off ledges is as viable a strategy as precise turn-based spellcasting, and seemingly innocuous decisions can come back to haunt you. Whether you're new to CRPGs or want to see what the genre is capable of today, Baldur's Gate 3 is unmissable – and if you're already a fan, might I recommend Baldur's Gate 2?

9. Wasteland 3

In Wasteland 3, a ranger fires an electric bolt that bursts an enemy into flames

Release date: August 28, 2020
Platform(s): PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X
Vibe: Expect the Unexpected

1988's Wasteland is best remembered as being the main inspiration behind Fallout, but its two sequels – released much later, in 2014 and 2020 respectively – remain just as vital. While Wasteland 2 is a faithful return to the CRPG genre's roots, Wasteland 3 is a little more contemporary and accessible.

On the surface, Wasteland 3 imagines a world where the Fallout series stayed isometric. But the shared DNA feels like a merry coincidence at times, as developer inXile Entertainment's post-apocalyptic Colorado is a beast unto itself. Forced to the wintry wasteland in search of unlikely allies, you'll juggle warlord politics with the harsh realities of survival; and whether your party members can defy mutants and bad weather to reach the game's myriad of endings depends entirely on the in-depth builds you've chosen for them. Wasteland 3: come for the Fallout experience, stay for Santa's narcotics sweatshop.

8. Disco Elysium

In Disco Elysium, detective Harry Du Bois speaks to two men who sit on a concrete cylinder. The dialogue responses and preceding conversation can be seen on the right-hand side of the screen

Release date: October 15, 2019
Platform(s): PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Switch
Vibe: Story-driven

To my knowledge, Disco Elysium is the only CRPG that can kill its protagonist with an uncomfortable chair. As an amnesiac alcoholic detective, it's your job to investigate the murder of a mercenary in fictional Revachol, all while trying to work out who you are whilst tip-toeing (or bumbling) through one ideological catfight after another.

With no combat to speak of, Disco Elysium is carried by the strength of its writing and loose-ended nature of its mystery. Prioritizing one hunch can turn up key evidence at the cost of another lead, and skill checks made by your own psyche means it's all-too easy to end up bickering with would-be witnesses. This is a great CRPG for anyone looking to sink their teeth into a good story – and having rolled credits 19 hours in, it's also a snappy option to boot.

7. Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines

In Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 a woman in a dark trench coat stands before a car with her hands on her hips, looking at the player-character

Release date: November 16, 2004
Platform(s): PC
Vibe: Quick Play

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines has stood the test of time. After 22 years, it remains not only one of the greatest first-person CRPGs, but one of the flat-out best RPGs ever made. You play as a vampire in the underbelly of Los Angeles, roaming the city and growing your powers whilst working for (and against) its ruling vampire clans.

Even today, Bloodlines' atmosphere is unlike any other. The twilit hours shared by mortal and immortal societies are eerily still, and expressive character builds pepper the atmosphere with grit: Nosferatu vampires are visibly undead, for example, forcing you to learn the city's sewers like the back of your hand to travel unseen; while the availability of blood magic, melee, and guns offers suitably immersive playstyles no matter your vampire fantasy.

6. Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader

In Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, companion Idira fires a spell at an enemy called Muaran

Release date: December 7, 2023
Platform(s): PC, PS5, Xbox Series X, Switch 2
Vibe: Story-driven

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is another example of an exceptional modern CRPG. Set in Games Workshop's grim vision of the distant future, you create and play as a newly-instated Rogue Trader – someone who has both vast and malleable remit to serve the dystopian Empire of Man however they see fit. In this case, that means unpicking interstellar cults and bringing entire planets under your rule; all while getting to know the crew of your city-sized spaceship.

Alongside Baldur's Gate 3, Rogue Trader is the CRPG I find myself recommending to friends the most. Its deep turn-based combat is a thrill for anyone with old-school leanings (see: making skill bars bigger than your head), but its intuitiveness and the ease at which it introduces the world of Warhammer 40K also makes this a brilliant pick for genre newcomers. And hey – if you'd like something newer, a very promising follow-up is on the way.

5. Dragon Age: Origins

In Dragon Age: Origins, companions Wynne and Leliana help the Warden fight a dragon

Release date: November 3, 2009
Platform(s): PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X
Vibe: Story-driven

Dragon Age: Origins was a grand experiment to see if developer BioWare could capture the spirit of '90s CRPGs with the glitz and fidelity of modern RPGs (by 2010's standards). The resulting world of Thedas feels like stepping into a confluence of literature's fantasy epics – think Lord of the Rings, Mistborn, and The Wheel of Time – and still inspires fans to write entire books on the setting.

While its age makes Dragon Age: Origins a little finicky to run, it remains smooth for the most part – especially once you gel with the game's real-time party combat. With a memorable lineup of companions, a storyline that will keep you invested, and plenty of lore to lose yourself in, BioWare's flair for choice and consequence remains knife-sharp in Origins.

4. Divinity: Original Sin 2

In Divinity Original Sin 2, the Red Prince fires a lightning bolt at an enemy in turn-based combat, and flames singe the ground nearby

Release date: September 14, 2017
Platform(s): PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Switch, Switch 2
Vibe: Expect the Unexpected

When someone asks me to recommend games like Baldur's Gate 3, my first port of call is to make sure they haven't slept on Divinity: Original Sin 2. As the last game Larian released before Baldur's Gate 3, there are some similarities – namely its personable party members, their stories, and the broader high fantasy setting – but Divinity: Original Sin 2's reactivity is more combat-centric, thanks to a deeper elemental system that lets you, say, heat water and electrocute the steam that comes off it.

While your quest to become a god can be played single-player (and should, at least once!) Divinity: Original Sin 2 is also one of the best co-op CRPGs on this list – so if you're shopping around on behalf of a group, this is the CRPG I'd recommend.

3. Fallout

In Fallout, a Vault Dweller faces up against two Rad Scorpians

Release date: October 10, 1997
Platform(s): PC, mobile
Vibe: Story-driven

The original Fallout isn't as impenetrable as people say. Beneath its '90s graininess and awkward world map is a plain ol' CRPG with point-and-click movement, turn-based combat, and a wasteland full of dilemmas to sweet-talk or shoot your way through.

While Bethesda's 3D entries offer more accessible ways into the series, the original Fallout is an absolute treat for fans, as it spends far more time on worldbuilding. The result is a living history lesson – introducing us to factions who remain important to the series even today, as Jonathan Nolan's TV adaptation draws heavily from older lore. And if you do find Fallout a little too confusing, I'd recommend trying Fallout 2 instead – which benefitted from a little more polish and quality-of-life than its predecessor, pulling it ahead slightly in our ranking of the best Fallout games.

2. Shadowrun Returns

In Shadowrun Returns, trolls and orks stand in a metro complex as an expolsion inflicts damage to a character who's nearby a helicopter

Release date: July 25, 2013
Platform(s): PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X
Vibe: Quick Play

While CRPGs often take tens upon tens of hours to complete, Shadowrun Returns is the shortest on this list by a wide margin. You can comfortably power through its story in 10 hours, and when you're hired by your dead friend to solve their own murder, you'll want to.

Set within a cyberpunk world with fantasy races and magic, Shadowrun Returns' turn-based combat is a treat for anyone who likes more tactically-minded CRPGs; while you're free to build anyone as anything thanks to a skill system that isn't tied to classes. While Shadowrun Returns' murder-mystery holds a soft spot in my own heart, I'd also recommend its follow-ups – Shadowrun: Dragonfall and Shadowrun: Hong Kong – as two equally potent cyberpunk CRPGs.

1. Pillars of Eternity

In Pillars of Eternity, the party which includes a wizard and a fighter battle some giant spiders

Release date: March 26, 2015
Platform(s): PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Switch
Vibe: Chill Out

Can an RPG list be complete without mentioning Obsidian? Here, at least, the answer is no. For good reason: the Xbox-owned studio is full-to-bursting with whip-smart writers who understand RPGs, and it's no surprise those skills translated well to the CRPG space. Like several previous suggestions, Pillars of Eternity's modern leanings make it a wonderful entry point to the genre – although once you're in, you'll find that Obsidian has unsurprisingly stayed very true to the boundary-pushing spirit of the medium.

Taking on the role of one of six playable races, the CRPG lets you shape your own journey through a rich adventure that still holds up over a decade later. It's also worth noting that Obsidian's 2025 RPG Avowed is also set in Pillars of Eternity's universe – so if you were left wanting more from the Living Lands, I'd recommend going straight to the source.

Best CRPGs FAQs

How do we pick the best CRPGs for this ranking?

For this ranking of the best CRPGs, I've taken into consideration the rich history of the genre to bring you a selection of modern picks that I've enjoyed and would personally recommend, as well as some classics that are still easy to get a hold of and are, more importantly, still worth trying out. I've also made sure to gain insights from my fellow CRPG fans and experts here at GamesRadar+ to bring you the best games currently available within the genre.

Our RPG "vibes" explained

The RPG vibes we use are descriptors for the general kind of experience you can expect from the games in our selection, and each one is curated to best suit the games and the rankings they live in, such as CRPGs.

A breakdown of the different vibes are as follows:

  • Story-driven: RPGs where the story propels your journey forward, with unforgettable companions and impactful choices and consequences.
  • Better With Friends: RPGs that can be played solo but thrive with others. These offer the possibility for shared experiences, be that online or locally.
  • Quick Play: RPGs that aren't hard to pick up and play whenever you have the spare time. The perfect choice for busy folks after quick gaming sessions.
  • Chill Out: RPGs that let you take things at your own pace, explore, and venture on side-quests if you choose. For those looking for a less demanding and more stress-free time.
  • Expect the Unexpected: RPGs where you can get silly and find yourself in novel and very unusual situations. Things can go wrong quickly, but also in very funny directions.

Why do we update our ranking of the best CRPGs?

Our ranking will get updated to ensure that it reflects the best CRPGs currently available. Since we see new games arriving all the time, it's important that we consider fresh releases within the genre and decide whether or not they deserve a top spot to bring you the most accurate and up-to-date selection of offerings. We'll also update the page sometimes to highlight future releases that we think are noteworthy and could potentially change our ranking.

How frequently do we update our rankings?

We tend to update our rankings each month if there are any new releases that need to be considered. We may not always change our ranking in light of new releases if we don't feel they're more deserving than our current picks. We try to keep the lists as accurate and up-to-date as possible, so we'll always be keeping an eye out for interesting new games that we then might also highlight to preface our ranking if we think it could shake up the list in the future.
