Nintendo first announced its new gaming platform in March 2015, but we already have more solid details about the next PS4 and Xbox One consoles than NX. While its competitors begin hyping up customers for an incremental, smartphone-inspired approach to hardware upgrades, something has to be keeping Nintendo all buttoned-up about its next big thing.
According to Nintendo elder statesman and Mario dad Shigeru Miyamoto, the company is working on something that's too novel to risk talking about prematurely: "In terms of NX, there's an idea that we're working on," Shigeru Miyamoto told the AP through a translator. "That's why we can't share anything at this point, and I don't want to comment on the other companies. If it was just a matter of following advancements in technology, things would be coming out a lot quicker."
One of the few things Nintendo has explicitly said about NX is that it won't be a direct successor to Wii or Wii U. Aside from throwing some subtle shade at Sony and Microsoft for doubling down on the more-powerful-hardware gambit - rather than the "let's add another screen" gambit - Miyamoto's statement goes along with much of the allegedly leaked info and rumors we've heard; NX will be a handheld / home console hybrid rather than a traditional gaming system.
Given the problems Nintendo had with selling Wii U's premise before it could get GamePads in hands (and, erm, after) it's understandable that the company would want to wait to make NX's message as clear as possible.
