Karl Urban talks Dredd

Dredd heads up the comic-book preview in the brand new issue of Total Film magazine (out tomorrow, folks), and inside we talk to Karl Urban, the man beneath the helmet.

The New Zealand native - who had his breakout moment playing Eomer in two of Peter Jackson’s Lord Of The Rings movies, before earning more geek cred in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek - told us about taking the law into his own hands, playing a character besmirched by the regrettable 1995 Sly Stallone vehicle .

Confirming the film’s brutal credentials, Urban offered, “It’s not a film for bed-wetters. It’s the perfect antidote to a lot of the superhero films that have come out in the last year or two. This is edgy. Really violent. Quite often in the comics there were graphic portrayals of missing limbs and splattered bodies. We don’t pull any punches.”

Judge Dredd has a rich comic-book history, having been featured in 2000 AD since 1977. So is there movie franchise potential?

Urban told us, “We’re releasing the film and we’re handing it over to an audience. If they embrace it, we’d love to come back and continue the story. The potential is limitless.”
