His & Hers review

Interesting if bleak doc on the legacy of marriage

Inspired by his mum, director Ken Wardrop’s charming but bland doc opens with the proverb: “A man loves his girlfriend the most, his wife the best, but his mother the longest.”

There’s nothing to offend any of those parties here, as 70 women from Ireland’s rural Midlands speak with tender wit about their men.

Niggling over the washing-up is the extent of marital strife – a refreshing change from embittered breakdown dramas, but a very rose-tinted one.

Still, we’re not spared a depressing ending: the interview segments are arranged age-sequentially, giving death and loneliness final say.
