Deadpool 2 won't feature Pierce Brosnan as Cable - the rumors are "completely made up"

Rumors about who will play Cable in Deadpool 2 have been flying faster than one-liners out of Wade Wilson’s mouth, but according to Pierce Brosnan, the production hasn’t found their man yet.

The actor, who has long been rumored to be a contender for the role of Deadpool’s gruff, time-traveling mercenary sidekick, went on Jimmy Kimmel Live and said the rumors were “completely made up.”

In case the video gets taken down for some reason, the former James Bond explains how the rumors began after a picture of Brosnan, Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds, and Logan star Hugh Jackman sitting together went viral. Reynolds’ photo seems to have been deleted, but here’s a similar one Jackman shared around the same time:

Fans put the pieces together and wondered if this meant Brosnan would be suiting up for the Deadpool sequel, but the actor shut squarely down those hopes on Kimmel. “Not true. Nothing’s come my way yet. It’s completely made up.”

Seems pretty straightforward, right? But let me address the conspiracy theorists for just a second. Sometimes actors will negotiate in the media for roles they want in an attempt to generate enough publicity to show the studio that they have value and the audience wants to see them in a certain part. I’m sure some people might say this video could serves as a perfect example of Brosnan executing that technique. The problem is, there have been like 10 different names floated to play Cable in Deadpool 2 so far. Normally that “negotiating in public” thing only comes into play when there is a limited number of contenders; since there are so many people apparently up for Cable right now (Stranger Things star David Harbour, Russell Crowe, etc), that tactic wouldn’t be super effective for Brosnan.

Still, I’m pulling for him and I hope he ends up with the role because I think it’d be a lot of fun to see him go toe-to-toe with Reynolds in a superhero film.

Directed by David Leitch (John Wick) and starring Ryan Reynolds and Zazie Beetz, Deadpool 2 hits theaters sometime in 2018. Who should play Cable in Deadpool 2?
