Theatre director Phyllida Lloyd is in talks with Universal Pictures and Playtone to make her directorial debut on a project she should know pretty well by now – the ABBA musical Mamma Mia!
Lloyd has directed the popular show in London, where it opened in 1999, and Broadway. Since it opened, Mamma Mia! has grossed over a billion dollars around the world – so goodness knows how much a film will make.
The musical features 22 ABBA songs, including Dancing Queen, Take A Chance On Me and The Winner Takes It All, so we’d advise not going to see the film with your mum, or you won’t be able to hear anything over the sound of her singing along.
Former ABBA members Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus will be involved as producers, as will Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson.
The film's release date has yet to be confirmed.
