Destiny is a game that will evolve over ten years - and players will be pleased to know that their Guardians will be with them until the end. There will be no need to switch characters between expansions or the inevitable sequel-style updates that will come over the coming decade.
Speaking exclusively to GamesRadar+, Engineering Lead Luke Timmins says: “We certainly take it seriously that Destiny is a ten-year thing. It’s a long-term thing and with these adventures that we’re adding my contract to you - and any player - is that your Guardian will always be there. We’re going to keep adding new stuff for you to do and I’d hope you’ll look at The Taken King and be like, ‘I’m looking forward to logging on again and hooking friends online’.”
Destiny’s player-driven set-up means that you can choose how your Guardian is specced, so there’s no need to enforce any kind of level or skill reset at any time. Variety comes from weapon and armour load-outs, along with sub-class skills, which will only continue to be expanded in the future. So, even though your Guardian will be the same character, they’ll likely play very differently two, five, and ten years down the line. Still, it’s nice to know we won’t have to reset or abandon our Guardians at any point.
How Bungie chooses to deal with the ever-increasing gap between new players and those who have sunk 1000s of hours into the game remains to be seen. Play time does yield better kit in Destiny, so expect there to be more and more incentives for newbies as the shooter ages. If Bungie won’t touch existing characters, then they need to bring new players up to speed much quicker with every significant update or the game will quickly become too hostile for fresh blood.
You can read our entire interview with Luke Timmins in the GamesRadar+ Presents... Destiny book book. And stay tuned for more stories throughout the week.
