A reliable source has confirmed to Next-Gen that Microsoft is cancelling the superhero MMO Marvel Universe Online.

As Crytpic Studios' development of Marvel Universe ramped up, NCsoft was eventually forced to outright buy Cryptic's original superhero MMO, the NCsoft-published City of Heroes, says our source. Now Microsoft has decided to cancel Marvel Universe, which leaves Cryptic with plenty of time and a nice chunk of change from the City of Heroes sell-off to develop a new IP.

The source, who wished to remain anonymous, said that an official announcement will be made in a few weeks about the demise of the game, unless something "drastic" occurs.
Are you a comic-book fanboy and a hardcore videogamer?

Did you mark out when Zatanna chanted, "Namtab Pots!" before she wiped Batman's memory?

Do you wish Zatanna erased the woeful Spider-Man clone saga from your memory?

Have you ever screamed, "Hulk Smash!!!" while breaking down some cardboard boxes?

If you've answered yes to any - or all - of these questions, then this is a great time to be you, because there are two superhero action RPGs vying for your time and dollars.

In one corner ...
X-Men Legends had a good run as an Action RPG but what about those of us who like our superheroes with a little less social outcast to them?
We've used our superhuman powers to gather up a full complement of new Marvel: Ultimate Alliance screens, publisher Activision's superhero RPG heading for a PS2, PS3, Xbox, Xbox 360, PC, Wii, PSP and GBA release this November. To see them, just hit the Images tab above. We've added a whopping six videos (a trailer and some character-specific highlight flicks) to the Movies tab, too.

Telling your friends you just bought an Xbox 360 wouldn't exactly indicate you'd just bought a machine with an RPG rich catalogue. As of right now, there's only one RPG available on the system, Bethesda's excellent The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and one MMORPG, Square's Final Fantasy XI. However, over the next few years the perception of the Xbox 360 is certain to change. Though not all are high-profile titles such as Final Fantasy, Valkyrie Profile, or Dragon Quest, there are a surprising number of role-playing titles in development for Microsoft's sleek white machine.
RPGs can arguably be described as the most vital genre for a console. Years after release, it's generally the RPGs that are remembered the fondest. After all, they've got detailed characters, intricate storylines, generally 20 or more hours of gameplay, and generally involve much more player emotional involvement and investment than other genres. One thing we're seeing on the Xbox 360 that wasn't evident on the Xbox is the support of Japanese RPGs. Microsoft and Mistwalker are teaming up to bring Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey to Japan, a territory where Xbox 360 sales are as impressive as a slice of bread. Thankfully, Blue Dragon is also being brought West next year, giving American Xbox 360 gamers a chance to experience a big-budget JRPG on their next generation console.

Moving past Blue Dragon, BioWare is bringing its next big title to Xbox 360 as well. Mass Effect has been nothing but impressive so far. Since the franchise is planned as a trilogy across the Xbox 360's lifespan, we're hoping for great things. RPG fans will also get BioShock, a title from Irrational Games that looks so good it won our Overall Game of the Show award for E3 2006. A number of online multiplayer games are being developed for Microsoft's console as well, including EA's Project Gray Company, Sega's Phantasy Star Universe, an upcoming Marvel MMO, and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. Other games such as Elveo...
Publisher Activision is giving gamers and comic fans a chance to be part of its forthcoming superhero action-RPG Marvel: Ultimate Alliance as the voice of one of the in-game characters.

Previously Activision held online auditions for fans to become the voice of weedy Hulk alter-ego Bruce Banner. The response was so overwhelming that it's decided to extend the competition to allow fans to try out for the voice of the Sub-Mariner Namor. We reckon you should go for fishy and ...
When action-RPG Marvel: Ultimate Alliance ships this fall, it'll be the third game to follow the beat 'em up precedent set by X-Men Legends. You'll take 20 of the most popular Marvel heroes through Atlantis, a floating military base and even an alien homeworld, powering them up and fleshing out their individual moves. Captain America, Spider-Man, Wolverine and Thor are just the tip of the iceberg, all recruited to stop Dr. Doom and his assembled team of villains.

The coolest level we saw had ...
The spiritual successor to X-Men Legends, Marvel Ultimate Alliance will be bolstering PS3 and Wii's launch day line-up this autumn, and we've had a chance to see what it's like on the go.

But despite being touted as a next-gen title, this action RPG looks like being little more than a prettied-up version of what X-Men Legends has already brought to current-gen systems.

Ultimate Alliance has the looks - we were able to see a PS3 version running, and it's as crisp as a dewy spring morning. But ...
Does the phrase "United we stand, divided we fall" mean anything to you? It does if you're a fan of action RPGs or video games based on comic book characters. When individual heroes can't sustain their own titles, why not take the X-Men Legends idea and cram it full of every major character a license can buy?

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance promises to do just that. You'll be able to control more than 20 Marvel heroes in an overhead bash-em-up fashion. Just like the Legends games, each hero can be ...
