Would you buy a PlayStation phone? Because it looks like one might be coming

Another new smart phone? Yep, it seems so. It's only at the rumour stage right now, but when that rumour comes from a very certain-sounding Engadget, we're inclined to get onboard. The story? A PSP/Android hybrid is coming as a co-production between Sony Ericsson and Google. And coming way, way sooner than you might expect.

According to Engadget's 'trusted source', the phone will ship with a 1 GHz CPU, standard PlayStation button layout and touch pad for analogue control. In terms of game quality, we're looking at PSOne/PSP standard looks. Apparently the games currently available for demo consist mainly of ports of games from those two machines, but new PSP games and dedicated titles are planned too. All content for the phone will supposedly be found for download in a new area of the Android Market.

And the most surprising bit? It could be ready for launch as early as October. Apparently the device has been in the works for quite some time (lending credence to those various PSP phone rumours we heard way back), and is in the very late stages right now. Sony is, of course, currently responding with the expected 'no comment on rumour or speculation' line, but watch this space.

But the big question is, are you interested? Would smart phone functionality make you more excited about PSP gaming? Or is it just another superfulous tweak to an old machine when you really want the PSP2? Would an official PlayStation phone turn your covetous eyes away from the iPhone, or will it be a pointless and expensive addition to the market when the iPhone can already do games like N.O.V.A. and GTA: Chinatown Wars? Let us know in the comments.

Hurry the hell up with the PSP2, Sony! Quit screwing around, there are enough smart phones and gaming phones out there already!
  • shyfonzie - August 13, 2010 1:41 a.m.

Pffft, they're rushing it out against 3DS. They need some shelf presence before PSP2 launches (hopefully).
  • sleepy92ismypsn - August 12, 2010 10:43 p.m.

I will buy this but I need a job first. I hope this doesn't replace the psp2.
  • AnonymouZ - August 12, 2010 9:54 p.m.

if it played dyssidia i definitely would. also, i don't own a cellphone yet, so this would be the perfect excuse to get one so family and friends stop nagging me.

I really wanted to see the PSP2 with a phone version. I think this psphone will suffer from the same problems the old psp had. It would be a great idea with 2 sticks, ps2 or better graphics, touchscreen and 4G online multiplayer
  • ThatGuyFromTV - August 12, 2010 9:04 p.m.

I didn't know they were making another N-Gage...

Look, the iPhone isn't great at any of the things it does and THAT(along with the price) is it's error. I really tried to love mine but I just felt it was a bit crap and rpgs and a few puzzlers aside most games are just better ANYWHERE else. MGSTouch and SF4 for iPhone are terrible ports mainly because of the feel-less, screen blocking controls. I've got small fingers and hands and it's a pain for me even on an iPad! However, had the games worked on deeper levels and controlled well, the phone been better and the vid/music playback top notch who's to say I wouldn't have loved the iPhone? Thing with this is, though, without the same set up as the PSP with it's nub just how many games will work very well? PSX games I suppose? So, sorry, not for me. Why not just incorporate Android and phone into the next PROPER PSP , add the much needed second stick and shoulder buttons(so we have four)and allow Sony to unleash their big portable weapon of the future-the PS2 library? How much more would it take to do THAT and have, like Apple, a phone free and a phone version at differing price points? Then there's all the talk of tethering for G3/4 devices for possible online play as well-where would this lower powered phone and gamer fit in? It's going to have to be pretty cheap, imho, to have any hope and with the clueless market already sewn up by Apple how will it fare? I think Sony NEED to be able to use that PS2 game library to have a real chance here and two versions(with and without phone) would be best.

@Gahmah I think your on to something here... Valve and Sony could surely cook something nifty on gaming... And especially GOOGLE Android and Sony Ericsson collaborating on the same project ought to be good! I saw a few people posting negative comments about the "PsP Go" tech being used with this... sure, it is not a PSP 2 but look at it this way... if it would've been a PSP 2/Phone, I'm sure the pricing would be truly INSANE! The iPhone 4 is already 600$ here, which is fucking crazy already; so imagine what would be a PSP 2/Phone... surely a grand! Nononono... I think this is a good hybrid... if only the price gets accessible! As for the applications for the PSPhone, hopefully theres going to be aplenty of them... and who's saying Google = Free stuff! Only time shall be the judge of this, if it's gonna be successful... I do prefer home gaming than handheld but if this thing is not too costly, I might just get one... and my Sony Ericsson is due for a change soon! Great timing Sony!!!

Well my iphone's not working properly anymore for me without discernable reason or fix, so I'd probably give it a shot. Gotten really tired of the stuff apples tied to with the iphone, like the market and itunes and all that other crap to suppress competition, so I'd like something different, hell if that whole valve working with sony thing keeps up, who knows what'll happen.
  • Patius - August 12, 2010 5:08 p.m.

once again, late to the game, and something that doesn't really appeal to anyone. People who game on the iPhone generally aren't gamers that would pay for a PSP priced game, and people who get a PSP might not want (or their parents might not let them) have a cell phone.
  • NanoElite666 - August 12, 2010 5:04 p.m.

I dub it... The PSPhone!! But seriously, I'd rather have a PSP2. Not too big on doing much with phones except using them to contact people.
  • Hotdiddykong - August 12, 2010 4:18 p.m.

A phone? This whole time and they made a phone? Meh not bad, maybe ill switch my phone for it but sony better come up with something new, psp3d would be a waste of time so don't bother copying nintendo, oh wait, they always do
  • pepheb - August 12, 2010 3:44 p.m.

I was interested... until I remembered that my last 3 phones were from Sony Ericsson. They all fail. ps:I'm not hating on Sony, I'm just scared...
  • BlindMarksman - August 12, 2010 3:43 p.m.

It´s the NGage all over again...
  • icantbelieveitsnutbutter - August 12, 2010 3:23 p.m.

Well, the N-Gage was a huge success right So thi should have no prob... Oh, nevermind. This is a gimmicky waste of time that will put Sony in a bad spot. People never learn... @sgloomy, the iPhone isn't that great at all... /i tried an iPhone 4 against a Droid X. No contest, the Droid spanked it's ass pink.
  • sgloomy - August 12, 2010 3:12 p.m.

I think everyone should give up trying to compete with the iphone. everyone brings out phone with better hardware features but i don't think any of them have any chance of catching up with the software part. the app store is just too big for anyone to catch up, no matter what they do, and i have a feeling the battery life on a ps phone isn't going to be too great
  • Hydrohs - August 12, 2010 3:11 p.m.

An Android phone that can play PSP games? Sounds alright to me. Doesn't sound to unrealistic, give it access to PSN and you could download PSP games, it's already more powerful than the PSP if it's got a 1GHz chip.
  • BodyDamage - August 12, 2010 3:04 p.m.

kinda makes me wish i hadnt gotten my droid last week. lulz. *facepalm*
