Why Resident Evil: Revelations could be better than Resi 5

Resi’s batting average on portable formats is frankly shit. So far, we’ve been treated to the horrors of the GBA’s Gaiden and a shoddy iPhone port of the best game in the series.

Thankfully, it looks like the 3DS and Revelations could change all that. With a terrifically moody setting, interesting plot dynamics and the prospect of 3D scares, we’re hopeful this will top the last, slightly disappointing African adventure. See the new trailer for yourself below.

3D could revitalise survival horror

We’re becoming increasingly certain that 3D ain’t no gimmick. In fact, we honestly think it could soon become as important to games as HD. And there's no genre that would benefit from the new tech more than survival horror.

Above: A terrifying prospect... in a good way

Just imagine a Licker lunging out from you in the dark, but because it's being rendered in 3D, the damn thing appears to be jumping out of the screen at you. In terms of delivering  a new level of tension and scares, the 3DS could yet be a revelation.

It looks like the environment is actually suited to y’know, horror

Let's just pause for a minute and reflect on Resi 5's primary location. The African setting simply wasn't scary. Oh sure, you had the occasional dimly lit mine and cave filled with weird-ass flowers. But the sun-kissed shanty towns that made up much of the game just didn't lend themselves to creating a tense atmosphere.

From what we've seen of Revelations, it looks firmly set to return the series to its horror roots. The shots released so far reveal a tanker location (similar to the small section in the fifth game) and a spooky corridor, akin to the ones seen in the mansion from Lost in Nightmares. At any rate, they look like environments we might actually shit our little knickers having to navigate through at night.

So in summary, this...

Is scarier than this...

Revelations could be better than 5 because as Resident Evil goes, 5 sucked. And I find it hard to believe Revelations could outsuck resident evil 5.

A better game than its other counter-part. That's about it. Had no real problems with Resident Evil 5, it just...wasn't Resident Evil 4, if that makes sense. Thank you for the article, gamesradar. As always, delivering the goods I'd always like to expect. :D

At this point, I may just avoid every single AAA game coming out between now and the 3DS release just to get a 3DS (except Portal 2, it's impossible to resist that). Maybe it's because half of the triple A games I want happen to be on the 3DS (at least they are AAA in my mind).

@elmaropwnz : Biohazard is the Japanese name of the series. If they go with traditional Resident Evil style or even RE4/RE5 controls I'll be happy. If they make it another shitty on-rails shooter I won't be. Resident Evil: Deadly Silence on the DS was great at least, so that's at least one good portable RE.

This does look cool but I have to agree with the changing of Jill, when I saw her in RE5 it took me a couple of minutes to figure out it was Jill

Playing RE4 right now on my PC due to it's infamous existence. God I can't stand it but I'm trying to be patient with the controls and game design. I'm excited about this title mainly hoping they'll evolve the damn franchise to modern day games!
  • darkvare - June 23, 2010 5:49 a.m.

i hope this gets made into dlc for re5
  • Doctalen - June 23, 2010 4:27 a.m.

I don't pay attention to Resident Evil series, but I thought every normal enemy was a zombie, they look like zombies move like them too.

While this is a great article and EXACTLY why I'm wanting this for my soon-to-be Nintendo 3DS, I will say that the closing picture of Jill shows that, compared to Chris who looks NOTHING like he did RE 1 and Code Veronica, her facial structure and body type hasn't really changed since RE 3. Closing point still remains though lol

@D0CCON - I have the same feeling man. But I only have a PS3. And I love it. Soooo....
  • Sabtos - June 22, 2010 11:49 p.m.

Rotting zombie ass is a horrible prospect.
  • gilgamesh310 - June 22, 2010 10:46 p.m.

Is this set b4 or after Resi 5?
  • taterboob - June 22, 2010 10:35 p.m.

Zombies return. FINALLY! It's been far, far too long and, frankly, the Las Plagas paled in comparison.
  • D0CCON - June 22, 2010 8:56 p.m.

I think I'd be willing to sell my PS3 to get this. I'd still keep my 360, but I would prefer this handheld over a full-fledged console.
