Which villains will appear in Batman: Arkham Asylum 2?

How do you follow a game like Batman: Arkham Asylum? You’ve just created arguably the greatest superhero title of all time. You’ve just raised the bar for every licensed adaptation to come. You’ve just won over the critics, the customers, the hardcore nitpickers and the casual fans. What can you possibly do next?

Easy. Make another one.

Obviously, Batman: Arkham Asylum 2 has not been announced. If the success of the first is any indication, however, we should expect a second. Better yet, we can already predict the sequel’s most important element – villains – simply by looking for clues in the original. Here, then, is who we strongly suspect might show up.

Killer Croc / Bane / The Scarecrow

These three are the most obvious inclusions for Arkham Asylum 2, and anyone who’s beaten the first game already understands why. Sit through the credits and you’ll be rewarded with an extra five seconds of story. They go something like this:

  • Batman flies away in his Batwing, looking like a total Batpimp.
  • Camera tilts down to the harbor water, revealing a forgotten barrel of Joker’s experimental Titan serum.
  • Monstrous hand erupts from said water and snatches said barrel.
  • Player exclaims, “Wow! _____ is gonna be in the sequel!”

What many gamers don’t realize, however, is that this final scene can change. Sometimes you’ll see Killer Croc’s hand, scaly and chained. Other times, it’s Bane with bulging veins and Venom-pumping tubes. Or Scarecrow’s needle-tipped fingers. As far as we can tell, the ending cycles randomly. Here are all three for your discerning comparison:

Clearly, the implication is that one of these characters has gotten hold of the serum and will soon be a house-sized, green-eyed freak, rampaging through the unsuspecting streets of Gotham. While we doubt any of them will be the sequel’s major villain, we do expect to see at least one in a supporting role. If you were the major villain, wouldn’t you want to harness their power?

Two-Face

Harvey Dent is always second. Once the Joker’s been checked off – once that classic matchup is out of the way – there is no villain that fans clamor for more than the coin tosser with dual personalities. Two-Face is simply too iconic, too important and too intrinsic not to include at some point. Because of his tragic history with both Batman and Bruce Wayne (not to mention Commissioner Gordon), he’s an essential part of the universe… a universe that, so far, Arkham Asylum’s creators have been very faithful towards.

They’ve already laid the groundwork. If you listen carefully enough during the first game’s ending, you’ll hear the following from a police dispatcher:

“All units, all units… the Second National Bank was just robbed by Harvey Dent, aka Two-Face… two officers down… suspect is fleeing in a patrol car!”

Above: Well, someone should probably go stop him, now shouldn’t they?

The Riddler

The best Batman villains are those who complement, and comment upon, a unique element of his character. The Joker, for instance, shows us that our hero is a mere step away from madness himself. Two-Face preys on the man behind the cowl, capitalizing on a former friendship with Bruce Wayne. Catwoman takes advantage of his eternal loneliness.

And the Riddler? He is the ultimate foil to Batman’s intellectual side, the villain most likely to bring out the “World’s Greatest Detective” and not just another fist fight.  The developers obviously appreciate this, including over 200 of the Riddler’s challenges as a side quest in the first game, but we want more. We want grand and intricate schemes, not merely trophies and puns. We want whole rooms and buildings hijacked by Edward Nigma, transformed into devious puzzle  traps that require every ounce of our hero’s wit, as well as every gadget on his belt.

The villain certainly has enough motive to antagonize Batman. Listen to how smug he sounds during this patient interview, right before his escape:

Now listen to how angry and vengeful he sounds after you’ve both completed all of his challenges and sent the police to his hideaway:

Yeah, that guy’s itching for a sequel.

Ra's al Ghul

The Demon’s Head, as this villain is sometimes called, does not seem like a natural fit for a videogame. At least not a videogame like Arkham Asylum. To begin with, he’s not insane, removing the eerie fear factor that so permeates the original. Also, he tends to travel the globe in his pursuit of mankind’s destruction, and we really don’t want Indiana Jones or Lara Croft mixed in with our Batman.

Worst, the good guy and the bad guy would share too many weird and unwanted connections. Bruce is often romantically linked with Ra’s al Ghul’s daughter and, in the latest comics, the two share a son (who also happens to be the newest Robin). That’s a lot of distracting baggage. No thanks.

Still, he’s definitely a possibility. In the current game, you can find his corpse while searching Arkham Mansion.

Return at the end of the game, however, and the body has vanished, no doubt whisked away by Ghul’s loyal followers, the League of Assassins. A quick dip in the Lazarus Pits – rejuvenating chemical pools in the DC universe – and Ra’s will be alive and ready for Arkham Asylum 2.

Well, if you find the hidden room in Batman: AA, you know that there are plans to build a larger facility in an abandoned part of the city. My prediction: the inmates take over, and each grab themselves a section, all vying to be THE villain who brings Batman down.

they've already released all the info on this game. robin will be in it as will catwoman, harley quinn, the riddler, two-face, and joker will be in it, however he is still recovering from his titan overdose. there may be a co-op mode on the game, nd it will take place in a place called arkham city. after arkham asylum, warden sharp took credit for batmans actions and won his mayoral campain and moved the asylum to a secluded part of the city where villains and their gangs run free. doctor strange (you may remember him from arkham asylum) is running this facility. you will be able to use the different gangs to your advantage, by pitting them aginst eachother to gain your own gang. you can now use every gadget in battle in some way and you will be able to counter thrown objects, as well as 2 enemies at a time.

how about blackgate prison as the next setting? the only thing referenced about it in the game is ratman's description, something about huge ventilation systems and some intricate sewer tunnels...

I was playing AA last night and came up with an idea. What if Rocksteady incorperated a multy player version in the second batman game. Players can play as different batfam characters and tie in the whole storyline. or at least a co op with Robin, Nightwing, or Batgirl. The possibilities are endless because rather than... have a semi linear game to play, the person playing Batman with supporting players can explore different sections of Gotham at different times to find clues and assist the main player. On a side note if you tie in playing as villin characters such as the Joker in real time. it will be a battle of wits for player against player game play. I know this sounds like alot to take in but have you ever heard of a game giving the option to play head to head against a real person in an adventure game I havent. Just a few thoughts

the villians so far are going to be awsome if they show up, but the one that isnt listed is mr freeze, remember when you fight harley quinn for the last time you can clearly see mr freeze's cell all encased in ice.

Video game Title should be: BATMAN GOTHAM CITY

Never happen but an interesting idea would be Lex Luther. He wants the serum for himself, he hires bane to get it. Bane kidnaps the Joker Now imagine at some point you also have to battle superman, using kryptonite. Than later in the game you have you are actually tossing Louis off a tall building, super man swoops in to catch her. You have to pound on super man while he is falling than get Louis before she hits the ground. At some point Joker and batman actually form a temporary alliance. Than later on he Joker in is a position where he can either escape or help Bats but he simply decides to leave (becoming a minor villain at this point).

I think that the setting should be like no mans land but there are fractions of the city taken by certain villans that team up like two face and joker and they have gang fights then batman has to step in so like ras al gul and calender man (just making these teams off the top of my head) vs prometheus and maxie zeus (between henchmen) then if they want to add this not saying they should whichever actions you choose batman to do that makes one side more dominant then all the others
  • intheshadowofthehorns - September 30, 2009 7:39 p.m.

The main villains should be Mr. Freeze, Clayface and Two Face.
  • MacGyver1138 - September 21, 2009 1:44 p.m.

The idea of an isolated area similar to the first game is probably necessary, but I really want to see Rocksteady's take on Gotham City, so I would love to see at least part of the game there. Even if it is only an intro fight or final boss fight, it would be nice to see the Dark Knight in his element. As far as villains, they really do have lots of choices that they set up in the first game. Personally, I could see Two-Face, The Penguin, or Scarecrow being the main villain, with lots of minor villains similar to the first game. Scarecrow would actually give the developers an excuse to have a portion of Gotham "quarantined" which would be the isolated area they need to have the feeling of the first game, but with a new setting. Also, seeing as how Batman uses fear so much, he makes an interesting villain to play off of. An entirely new villain created for the game would be interesting as well, though I don't know how well that would tie in with all of the existing villains sure to show up.

  • drunation - September 7, 2009 4:22 p.m.

Batman cithom city sounds like GTA batman.
  • drunation - September 7, 2009 4:21 p.m.

Am I the only one that thinks Frank Miller's Dark Night Returns would be fantastic. It may be in the future, but the mutants would be excellent commons, not to mention a "Bat Tank." A fight with a sold out to the government Superman. Wow this screams video game. Now that I put this thought down it sounds like Gears of Batman, oh well.

Great article, and I really loved the game. I also think that the sequel could be in the prison (blackpool or something like it?) They refer to it many times in the game and I think a prison setting is not for out compared to a loony house!! Anyways, first DLC..
