What's the story with Sonic the Hedgehog 2010?

Not surprising: Sega announcing a new Sonic the Hedgehog game. Not surprising: Sega claims this latest entry will be a return to form, finally restoring the ailing franchise to its former glory. Totally surprising: we may actually believe them this time.

So we know it’s 2D. We know it’s HD (which rules out Wii). We know it’s clearly focused on speed and old-school feel based on the sound effects and specific blue-blur animations. By all accounts, this is it folks, the game we’ve been asking for since the late ‘90s. And you know what? We’re ready to bite… almost.

Above: OH MAN

Straight away, Sega's playing to its lifelong fans, throwing us all the beloved logo from the long-gone Genesis days.

But we have to wonder... is there something Sega's not telling us? This wouldn’t be the first timeit pulled the wool over our eyes, as last year it heavily promoted the “classic” levels in Sonic Unleashed and conveniently left out the part about the plodding were-hog until weeks later. Consider that with the game’s supposed codename (Project Needlemouse) and we’re starting to wonder what the “bit” is really going to be.

Will it truly only star Sonic? Will it be a disc or a downloadable XBLA/PSN title, aspreviously hintedby Sega of America’s VP of Marketing Sean Ratcliffe? Will it be an actual Sonic the Hedgehog 4? We desperately want to know more, and truly think that this time, THIS time things will work.

What do you think? Let us know in the comments below!
