Video tour of the new Xbox Live dashboard update - what you’ll love and hate

Whether you’re ready or not, the next Xbox 360 dashboard update is almost here – on Tuesday, your console interface will look very, very different. Microsoft is making a lot of changes this time, aggressively pushing social media integration and voice navigated search, while veering from the kiddy aesthetic to one more reminiscent of the Windows Phone.

Will you love or hate the new layout? Find out right now, as we take you on a video tour of features like cloud storage, beacons, Bing and more. Check it out:

The Xbox Live dashboard update goes live December 6 and will launch with apps for, Comcast On Demand and Verizon FiOS TV services, as well as an updated Netflix interface. For more impressions, head here.

I hate that they still didn't give us back the bottom half of the screen for themes. Instead they plotted everything right, smack in the middle of the screen. They couldn't have docked it at the bottom or had it fade in and out like the new Netflix interface does? Which, BTW is awesome! That's the only part of the update I am enjoying so far.

UPDATE: Major Nelson tweeted at 9:21am that "We are still working to get the release out. Stay tuned, we'll have an update this afternoon (PT) on when it will begin rolling out." At 7am Pacific time this morning Major Nelson tweeted that "the timing for Xbox 360 dashboard update has been slightly delayed. I'll have a status update later today." How long of a delay? We're not sure yet, but the update seems to indicate we won't hear any additional news until this afternoon. We'll keep you posted on any updates we hear and when we might expect the new dashboard to arrive.

You sure it's the 6th? I tried around 1am, 7am, and now at 3:20. Still nothing. They're probably going to wait until peak hours to release it so it disrupts everyones night.

  • LuisHernandez1988 - December 6, 2011 11:13 a.m.

  • LuisHernandez1988 - December 6, 2011 11:13 a.m.

I know its barely worth mentioning, but it really pisses me off when they just decide to scrap capital letters for names and titles. I think it looks shit and makes things standout less so someone needs to get it changed.

    What time is the update?
  • jmcgrotty - December 6, 2011 2:27 a.m.

I really, REALLY don't know what is worse: MS adding any cloud features or anyone NOT furious about it and refusing to use it. Cloud computing is one of the 3 biggest fking cancers in technology. Pathetic. Absolutely pathetic. Thanks for supporting bad choices, folks.
  • avantguardian - December 6, 2011 2:53 a.m.

ummm...i'm pretty sure you don't have to use it. but yeah, get mad. that helps.
  • yonderTheGreat - December 6, 2011 5:02 a.m.

Yes, cuz "cloud computing" is an entirely new concept. And also, what avantguardian said.

I think I'll miss moving up and down to go through sections and left and right to go through related things to each section, but this doesn't look too bad (apart from that crapload of huge advertising, sheesh, I already know about Rage, if I want it, I'll buy it).

I'm in this video a lot... Nice to know they didn't change everything completely. Doesn't seem like that bad of an update, but I have to use it before I call it better.

LULZ I was on when they recorded this video!!
  • curtisthurman - December 5, 2011 3:41 p.m.

I didn't see this mentioned on the comments page (or it was and I missed it) but the art in the background when you click on the game description is still there for me and I have the beta update. Don't know why it didn't show up for you.
  • Tymiegie - December 5, 2011 5:26 p.m.

Skyrim just has a boring background. If you look closely you can see the logo in the upper right corner. That's all Bethesda thought they needed, apparently.

Itll b nice to c sumthin different, but Im not 2 excited
  • JudeDude92 - December 5, 2011 12:43 p.m.

I don't use my Xbox for netflix (the selection blows here in Canada). I don't use it for media integration, I use it to play video games. And I sure as hell don't want it looking like Windows Phone invaded my tv, if I wanted that I would buy a Windows Phone. Idea: Leave the dashboard alone, and fix the games! (Skyrim's backward-flying dragons, for example) Not the same people behind dashboard and Skyrim, I know, but come on, the dashboard is fine.
  • yonderTheGreat - December 6, 2011 5:03 a.m.

... So? If the only thing you use it for is gaming, then you only need the very first page. Accept that you're a dying minority. As for the Windows Phone thing... um... Windows Phone is based on the xbox (bright green) color scheme, not the other way around
