It's been a fine year for Steam, with the platform expanding onto Mac and highlighting no end of titles, big-name and plucky indie alike. To celebrate, Valve is rounding off the year with a promotion that ought to reward achievement-junkies and freebie-addicts in equal measure.

The Great Steam Treasure Hunt, on from now until the 20th, rewards players for fulfilling an ever-changing series of objectives. Every 48 hours, Valve will set players four new challenges, ranging from in-game achievements to community housekeeping. Fulfilling the criteria will put you in the draw to win the top five games on your Steam wish list – and on a day when the challenges are steep enough, that could be a pretty slim bracket you fit into. Three grand prize winners will also win their pick of 100 Steam games.
As an example of how the Hunt will work, the first four challenges relate to the Steam Community, R.U.S.E., Poker Night at the Inventory and Chime (see Steam's page for the details). There'll be red-light sales going on throughout the Hunt, and coincidentally enough, the first titles to go on sale are R.U.S.E., Poker Night at the Inventory and Chime. See how this works?
To get started, head to the page for the Hunt (again, here it is) or just jump onto the service to get the details on the splash page. Let us know if you win anything!
